December Birthstone Jewelry

Rare, deeply saturated, and found in only one place on earth. Tanzanite's blue-violet color shifts between rich indigo and violet depending on the light, producing a stone that looks different at every hour of the day. Discovered in Tanzania in 1967 and found nowhere else on earth since, it is one of the most geologically unique gemstones used in fine birthstone jewelry. Shop December birthstone jewelry at Aquamarise® and wear the stone that belongs to the rarest corner of the mineral world.

The December birthstone is not one stone but three — turquoise, tanzanite, and zircon — with blue topaz widely accepted as a fourth, modern option. All four share December’s color: blue, from turquoise’s opaque sky tone to tanzanite’s deep blue-violet. This collection leads with tanzanite, the rarest of the four and our deepest December inventory — 44 designs across rings, ring sets, necklaces, and earrings in 925 sterling silver, 14K gold vermeil, and solid 14K gold.

Tanzanite First: December’s Rarest Stone

We build the month around tanzanite deliberately. It is the only December stone with a single source on earth, the only one discovered within living memory, and the one that photographs least like anything else — a violet-inflected blue no sapphire or topaz repeats. The result is a page of tanzanite birthstone rings, engagement sets, and pendants, with the wider December family — turquoise, zircon, and blue topaz — covered honestly below. Filter above by product type, metal, or price to narrow the collection.

Blue-Violet from a Single Hillside on Earth

Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, found in exactly one place: the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. No second deposit has ever been located, which gives the December birthstone tanzanite a rarity credential most gems at accessible prices cannot claim — and a plausible endpoint, since the known deposit is finite.

The stone is also optically restless. Tanzanite is trichroic: it shows blue from one crystal direction, violet from another, and occasional burgundy flashes from a third, so the color shifts gently as the hand moves between daylight and lamplight. At Mohs 6–7 it asks for a little respect — protective or low-profile settings for daily rings, and a habit of removing rings for rough work — which every listing states plainly rather than hiding in fine print.

Turquoise, Zircon, and Blue Topaz: the Wider December Family

Honesty about the rest of the month. Turquoise — the traditional December stone, opaque sky-blue, Mohs 5–6 — appears here in a small, occasional selection; our turquoise jewelry collection holds a handful of pieces at any time rather than a deep catalog. Blue zircon, the brilliant historical alternate with fire approaching diamond’s, is a stone we cover in depth in our blue zircon guide. Blue topaz, the widely accepted modern addition, lives in its own London blue topaz rings collection — many December birthdays choose it for its Mohs 8 durability.

Whichever December gemstone you choose, the metals follow the store’s honest tiers: rhodium-finished sterling silver from $69, 14K rose and yellow gold vermeil, and solid 14K gold made to order through the custom ring service. December spans Sagittarius and early Capricorn; the full zodiac map is in our birthstones by month guide.

Tanzanite Meaning and December Gifting

Tanzanite’s modern symbolism centers on transformation, calm, and new beginnings — fitting for a stone unknown to the world before 1967, when it was found in the Merelani Hills and named for its only country of origin. For December birthdays that fall beside the holidays, the timing is generous: a tanzanite piece works as birthday and Christmas gift in one, and the blue-violet reads unmistakably wintry against both silver and gold.

Cross-month pairings are a quiet specialty of the collection. A tanzanite and aquamarine ring — December’s violet-blue beside March’s ice-blue — bridges two birthdays in one design, and our teardrop two-stone settings handle the pairing beautifully; couples and mothers marking two winter birthdays choose it most. For gifting without sizing risk, heart-cut tanzanite pendant necklaces and bezel stud earrings carry the same stone in formats that always fit, no ring size required.

Continue with Tanzanite

This page is the December collection — the month’s stones chosen for their birth-month significance. When tanzanite itself is the destination, two dedicated collections go deeper: the full tanzanite jewelry range across every product type, and tanzanite engagement rings built around protective bridal settings. All twelve months live in the birthstone jewelry hub, with November’s topaz and citrine just before and July’s ruby half a year away.

Handcrafted, Guaranteed, and Honestly Priced

Every piece is handcrafted using recycled metals and responsibly sourced stones, ships worldwide with insured delivery and a written warranty, and carries a 14-day return window on non-customized work. Complimentary engraving is available on most designs. We hold a 4.9-star average across 38,000+ reviews collected on our store and on Etsy, where we have sold since 2016. Tanzanite birthstone jewelry here is honestly priced for genuine rarity — starting from $69 in rhodium-finished sterling silver.
