Sapphire is gem-quality corundum, a crystalline form of aluminum oxide, and every color of corundum except red is a sapphire. That definition only tells part of the story. Sapphire is one of the toughest natural materials on earth, hard enough to survive centuries in crown jewels and useful enough that synthetic versions cover watch faces and phone camera lenses. It also comes in nearly every color, not just the royal blue most people picture. What Is Sapphire?
A colorless mineral that borrows every color it wears.
Per the Gemological Institute of America, sapphire is the mineral corundum, aluminum and oxygen locked in a tightly packed hexagonal lattice. Pure corundum is completely colorless; gem-quality colorless material is sold as white sapphire. Everything else about the stone's appearance comes from trace elements that make up less than one percent of the crystal. When the trace is chromium in high enough concentration to turn the stone red, the gem is called ruby. Every other color, including pink, stays in the sapphire family.
That tight atomic structure is why sapphire behaves the way it does. It survives centuries buried underground and centuries more set into crowns, and it is dense, bright and resistant to almost everything a hand meets. How Trace Elements Create Sapphire's Colors
Less than one percent of the crystal decides everything.

Because the color comes from impurities rather than the base mineral, gemologists call sapphire allochromatic. It is also why heat treatment works: heating rearranges how those trace elements sit in the crystal, and that is the subject of its own section below.
Hardness, Toughness and What Mohs 9 Actually Means
Second only to diamond, with no weak plane.
Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond at 10. The scale is not linear; diamond is several times harder in absolute terms. Even so, nothing in ordinary life scratches sapphire, and unlike topaz, emerald or diamond it has no cleavage planes along which it can split. That is why it performs so well in daily wear and why synthetic corundum is used for scanner windows and watch crystals.
Hardness and toughness are not the same thing. Hardness resists scratches; toughness resists cracks. Sapphire scores very well on both, but it is not indestructible. Drag it across a countertop and nothing happens; strike a thin girdle hard against concrete and it can chip. A protective setting is sensible for very active wearers, and unnecessary for most. Blue Sapphire: How the Best Blue Is Judged
Hue, tone and saturation, and the origins that set the standard.
Color has the greatest influence on sapphire value. The GIA's sapphire quality factors describe the most prized blue as velvety blue to violetish blue, in medium to medium-dark tones, with strong to vivid saturation. Too dark and the stone goes inky; too light and it looks washed out; gray or green modifiers pull the price down. Within blue there is a hierarchy that comes from three historic sources.
- Kashmir cornflower blue. The benchmark. Mined in the Padar Valley of the Himalayas from 1881 until the deposits were essentially exhausted by around 1930. Fine silk inclusions scatter light so the blue seems to glow rather than merely shine, the "velvety" look every other sapphire is measured against.
- Burma (Mogok) royal blue. Intensely saturated, slightly darker than Kashmir, with less haze. Second in prestige, though sourcing from Myanmar now raises sanctions and ethics questions buyers should ask about.
- Ceylon (Sri Lanka) blue. Lighter, brighter and very clean, with a lively sparkle. Sri Lanka also produces most of the world's fancy sapphires and remains commercially and ethically accessible.
Clarity matters less than in ruby: blue sapphire usually has some inclusions, and extremely clean stones command a premium, but in Kashmir material the silk is part of the value. Cutters must handle color zoning and pleochroism, which is why a well-cut sapphire shows even color face-up. Most commercial blue sapphires weigh under five carats, and fine large stones remain rare enough that size drives price sharply at the top.

Where Sapphires Come From
Origin matters more in sapphire than in almost any other gem.
A Kashmir sapphire and a Madagascan sapphire can both be blue, both be corundum and both rate Mohs 9, and the Kashmir stone can sell for ten times as much. Provenance reports from laboratories such as Gübelin, SSEF and AGL can multiply a fine stone's value, which is why the question for an expensive sapphire is not "what is it" but "where is it from."

Montana deserves a note. It is the only commercially significant sapphire source in the United States, its stones were first found during gold mining in the 1860s, and buyers who want a traceable, domestic origin have made Montana teal and parti sapphires one of the fastest-growing corners of the market.
Treatments, Lab-Grown Sapphire and Simulants
Three things that are legitimate, and one that must always be disclosed.
Heat treatment
Most sapphires on the market have been heated, often to temperatures above 1,500 degrees Celsius, to improve color and dissolve silk that clouds clarity. The change is permanent and stable, the treated stone is still natural sapphire, and the practice is accepted throughout the trade as long as it is disclosed. Milky Sri Lankan rough called geuda is routinely transformed into gem blue this way. Unheated stones with a laboratory report confirming no treatment command a meaningful premium, typically tens of percent over comparable heated stones and far more at the very top.
Beryllium diffusion
A different matter. Here color is added from outside during heating, so it concentrates near the surface rather than running through the crystal. Diffusion-treated sapphire is valued well below heated stone, cannot be recut without losing color, and must always be disclosed.
Lab-grown sapphire
Real corundum, with the same chemistry, structure and Mohs 9 hardness as mined sapphire. Synthetic sapphire was first produced commercially in 1902 by the Verneuil flame-fusion method, in which powdered aluminum oxide melts in a flame and crystallizes; that process still makes the industrial sapphire in watch faces and lenses, while flux and hydrothermal methods produce jewelry-grade stones with more natural-looking inclusions. Lab-grown sapphire must be disclosed and costs a small fraction of natural. What it lacks is provenance: a Kashmir stone is worth more because of where it came from, not because it is harder or bluer.
Simulants
Glass, blue spinel, blue cubic zirconia and synthetic blue quartz are sold to imitate sapphire's look. They are not corundum and do not share its hardness. Refractive index, specific gravity and inclusion analysis separate them from the real thing, which is why a laboratory report matters for any valuable purchase. Three things to remember. Price per carat is non-linear, so a fine two-carat stone can cost several times a one-carat stone of the same quality. Treatment status can move value by tens of percent. Documented weights, provenance and prices.
- St Edward's Sapphire. The oldest gem in the British Crown Jewels, set in the topmost cross of the Imperial State Crown. Legend says it came from the coronation ring of Edward the Confessor, reinterred in 1163; the attribution is tradition rather than documented fact, but the stone's age is not in doubt.
- The Logan Sapphire. A 422.98-carat untreated Sri Lankan sapphire, the heaviest mounted gem in the Smithsonian's National Gem Collection, set in a brooch with about 16 carats of diamonds and donated in 1960.
- The Blue Belle of Asia. A 392.52-carat Ceylon sapphire sold at Christie's Geneva in November 2014 for about $17.3 million, then a world auction record for a sapphire, at roughly $44,000 per carat.
- Princess Diana's engagement ring. A 12-carat Ceylon sapphire surrounded by diamonds, chosen in 1981 and now worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales. It did more to popularize sapphire engagement rings than any stone in the twentieth century.

Sapphire has been the September birthstone since the modern list was standardized in 1912, and it is the traditional gift for the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries. Medieval clergy wore it as a symbol of heaven, kings wore it to project authority, and in 1215 Pope Innocent III decreed that bishops' rings should be set with sapphire. The easiest colored stone to look after.
- Routine cleaning: warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush; rinse and dry.
- Ultrasonic and steam: safe for untreated and heated sapphire. Avoid both on fracture-filled or diffusion-treated stones, and on vermeil settings.
- Chemicals: bleach and chlorine will not harm the stone but will attack settings and finishes; take the ring off.
- Storage: sapphire scratches almost everything else, so keep it away from pearls, opals, moonstone and emerald.
- Impact: hard knocks can chip a thin girdle. Remove it for contact sports and heavy manual work.
- Repolishing: a jeweler can repolish a scratched sapphire if enough material remains.
