Genuinely — its lineage runs straight to the old mine cuts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when squarish stones with rounded corners, high crowns, and visibly large culet facets were simply how diamonds were cut. Antique-style cushions still reproduce those proportions, big culet and all, while modern cushions tune the facets for electric light. Either way the shape reads heirloom on first wearing — no other brilliant cut carries as much history.

Near-square ratios (about 1.00–1.09) are the classic pillow: plush, symmetrical, and made for halos. A true 90-degree princess corner concentrates impact and must be capped by protective prongs; the cushion’s rounded shoulders spread any knock across a curve, the same reason the shape survived two centuries of daily wear before modern settings existed.
