Faelight Cut loose gemstones are fantasy cut stones whose pavilions are carved with concave grooves radiating from a polished central cross, so each sapphire, topaz and ametrine looks lit from within. This collection gathers every stone we cut to that pattern as its own listing: individual stones in four lab-grown sapphire colors, pink, green, blue and lavender purple, plus natural sky blue topaz and natural ametrine, across seven outlines, kite, long hexagon, oval, marquise, coffin, rectangle and pear, each about one to two carats and sold unset. It is the one place in our loose gemstones range where the concave starburst pattern lives; Faelight Cut is our house name for a cut the trade files under fantasy, star, starburst and concave cuts, and our Faelight Cut guide tells its story.

Why a Faelight Cut Loose Gemstone Looks Lit From Within

A flat facet returns light as a single sheet. A concave groove behaves like a convex mirror turned inward: it throws a narrow bright line along its crest with darker flanks on either side, and the eye reads that fine alternation of bright and dark as brilliance. GIA's research on fantasy carving records two practical bonuses as well: the curved pavilion scatters light across the whole stone, so there is no dead window through the table, and the pattern disguises small inclusions a flat-cut stone would show. The effect is strongest in light-to-medium tones, which is why this collection is built on pastel and mid-saturation colors rather than inky ones. The grooves are cut and polished into the pavilion itself, so the starburst is permanent and cannot wear or fade the way a coating can.

Faelight Cut Lab-Grown Sapphire: Loose Sapphire in Pink, Green, Blue & Lavender

Lab-grown sapphire is sapphire: the same aluminum oxide crystal as mined corundum, with the same 9 on the Mohs scale, grown in a controlled environment instead of the ground. Clean, evenly colored rough matters more for a concave pavilion than for a flat one, because every groove is a small mirror and an inclusion inside it repeats across the whole starburst. The sapphire here comes in four colors, pink, green, blue and lavender purple, with no post-growth treatment disclosed by the cutter, and each stone is listed on its own. Sapphire is the September birthstone and the hardest stone in this collection, so these are the first choice for a daily-wear engagement ring. Our sapphire guide covers color grading and origins, and the sapphire engagement rings collection shows how the stone wears once set.

Faelight Cut Natural Sky Blue Topaz & Ametrine: The Natural Pair

Two stones in the collection are mined rather than grown. Sky blue topaz is natural topaz whose color, like virtually all blue topaz sold today, comes from irradiating and gently heating colorless rough, a stable, permanent treatment stated plainly on the listing. At 8 on the Mohs scale it is hard, but topaz has one direction of perfect cleavage, so its points deserve a protective setting. Ametrine is a single quartz crystal that grew with amethyst violet in one zone and citrine gold in the other, mined commercially from one source in eastern Bolivia. It is natural and untreated, 7 on the Mohs scale, and in a concave cut the two colors are pulled across each other in bright rays. Topaz anchors our November birthstone jewelry, while ametrine bridges amethyst and citrine.

Faelight Cut Shapes & Sizes: Kite, Hexagon, Oval, Marquise, Coffin, Rectangle & Pear

The range runs across seven outlines, from about 6 x 8 mm to 7 x 10 mm and roughly one to two carats, and every listing is one individual stone, so a matched pair or a three-stone layout is assembled stone by stone from what is on the page. Pointed outlines show the starburst best, because the grooves run the length of the stone and end in the points: the kite, the marquise, the pear and the coffin each read as one flare of light. The long hexagon and the rectangle keep the pattern symmetrical for a bezel or a bold east-west setting, and the oval is the softest, most traditional of the group. Each listing shows that exact stone, measured, photographed and filmed, so what arrives is what you saw.

Faelight Cut vs Fantasy Cut, Star Cut & Concave Cut: One Family, Several Names

Fantasy cut is the umbrella term, in use since Bernd Munsteiner began carving notches and curves into transparent stones in the late 1960s, for any cut that sculpts a gem instead of faceting it flat. Concave cut describes the tool: curved facets ground on a cylinder, which reached commercial faceting machines in 1990. Star cut and starburst cut describe the pattern, concave grooves radiating from the center of the pavilion. Faelight Cut is our name for that pattern, cut to our specification by a specialist lapidary workshop. It is often compared with John Dyer's Starbrite cut, a trademark we neither use nor claim; the one genuine Dyer stone in our range, a parti-color Australian sapphire, is there to study side by side. It is also not the cut on our Fireworks Cut engagement rings, which use a different fantasy faceting.

From Faelight Cut Loose Stone to Finished Ring: Setting, Care & Custom Design

Because the pattern lives in the pavilion, the setting should leave the underside open: prongs, an open-backed bezel or a cathedral mount with an open gallery keep the starburst alive, while a closed back dims it. Any stone on this page can be set into a made-to-order ring through our custom ring service, with the stone's outline guiding the design, and the custom engagement rings gallery shows settings we have already built. Care is simple: warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush worked along the grooves, since the pavilion collects skin oils faster than flat facets. Sapphire tolerates an ultrasonic cleaner; topaz and ametrine should skip it and avoid sudden heat. Every stone and setting we sell stands behind a 4.9-star average across 38,000+ reviews collected on our store and on Etsy.
