Two stones side by side: a 4 × 8 mm marquise natural garnet in deep red and a 4 × 6 mm pear black onyx. Blackened leaves frame the pair, and the band is two strands twisted like a vine, one of them set with small round onyx. Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish.

The Design
Toi et moi means "you and me": two stones set together, one for each person. Here a red marquise leans against a black pear, each in its own prongs, so the two read as a pair and not as a center stone with a side stone. Our guide to what a toi et moi ring means covers the history of the style.
The setting is botanical. A leaf curls up on either side of the stones, and the band splits into two strands that twist around each other like a vine, one polished and one set with a row of small round onyx. In black it reads as a thorned vine more than a garden one. If you are looking past a plain solitaire, our guide to non-traditional engagement rings maps the wider field.
The Garnet and the Onyx
The marquise is natural garnet, a deep red with a wine-dark body that flashes brighter red when light passes through it. Garnet is the January birthstone and sits at 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. Our pieces on garnet meaning and garnet engagement rings cover the lore and the practical questions, and the January birthstone guide has more on garnet as a gift.
The pear is natural black onyx, an opaque black chalcedony, and the small round stones along the band are natural onyx too. Onyx has long been worn as a stone of protection and resolve, covered in our piece on black onyx meaning.
Metal
The ring is solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish, a platinum-group metal that settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat black. The darkened metal and the onyx drop away visually and leave the garnet as the only color.

Care
Garnet and onyx both suit daily wear with normal care. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and household chemicals, which dull the ruthenium finish, and take the ring off for the gym, gardening and heavy cleaning. Store it in its velvet box rather than loose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the garnet natural?
Yes. The marquise stone is natural garnet.
Is the black stone natural onyx?
Yes. The pear stone and the small round stones along the band are natural black onyx.
What does toi et moi mean?
It is French for "you and me". The style sets two stones side by side, one for each person in the couple.
How big are the two stones?
The marquise garnet is 4 × 8 mm and the pear onyx is 4 × 6 mm.
What color is the garnet?
A deep red. It looks wine-dark in low light and flashes a brighter red when light passes through it.
Is garnet a birthstone?
Yes. Garnet is the January birthstone.
Are garnet and onyx durable enough for an engagement ring?
Yes, with normal care. Garnet is 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale and onyx is 6.5 to 7. Remove the ring for manual work and avoid harsh chemicals.
How dark is the black ruthenium finish?
Ruthenium finishes to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat jet black. The slight reflectivity keeps the leaves and the twist of the band visible.
What is the ring made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver throughout, with a black ruthenium finish. No brass or base metal.
Does this ring come in other versions?
Yes. The same design is also made in sterling silver with a simulated aquamarine and a simulated diamond. Use the swatches on this page to switch between them.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 4 through 11, including every half size.
Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Not entirely. The two stones sit wider than the band, so a straight band leaves a small gap. A contour or curved band will nest more closely.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
