The Design
Ravenna is built like a piece of castle ironwork. The hexagon sits in a beaded frame, and from the frame scrolls curl outward in every direction, each edged in milgrain, so the setting reads as a small ornament rather than a plain halo. A marquise sapphire crowns the top and bottom of the frame, and the shoulders open into milgrain loops that hold a round sapphire each before the band narrows.
It is a castlecore ring: dark, ornate and a little medieval, for anyone whose taste runs to romantasy and courts after dark. It sits naturally among our gothic engagement rings and sapphire engagement rings. If you are looking past a plain solitaire, our guide to fantasy engagement rings maps the wider field.
The Cornflower Sapphire
The center is lab-grown sapphire in cornflower blue, the soft, slightly violet blue that the most prized natural sapphires are named for. Lab-grown sapphire is real corundum, with the same chemistry and the same 9 on the Mohs scale as mined sapphire, grown in a laboratory rather than dug from the ground. Here it is cut as an elongated hexagon, 4 × 10 mm, which runs the length of the finger and gives the frame something long to wrap around.
Sapphire is the September birthstone. Our sapphire meaning guide covers its history, and our comparison of aquamarine versus sapphire is useful if you are weighing blue stones against each other.
The Accents and the Metal
The two marquise stones and the two rounds are lab-grown sapphire as well, matched to the center.
The ring is solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish, a platinum-group metal that settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat black. The slight reflectivity is what keeps every bead of the milgrain visible. Part of our black ruthenium jewelry collection; our guide to gothic wedding rings covers the wider style.

Care
Sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale and well suited to daily wear. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working the brush along the milgrain. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and household chemicals, which dull the ruthenium finish, and store the ring in its velvet box rather than loose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the sapphire real?
Yes. It is genuine sapphire, a corundum, lab-grown rather than mined. Same chemistry, same hardness, same color.
What color is cornflower sapphire?
A soft medium blue with a slight violet cast, the color the most prized natural sapphires are named for. It reads a little more violet under warm indoor light.
Are the accent stones sapphires too?
Yes. The two marquise stones and the two rounds are lab-grown sapphire, matched to the center.
How big is the center stone?
4 × 10 mm, an elongated hexagon set north to south so the length runs along the finger.
Is sapphire a birthstone?
Yes. Sapphire is the September birthstone.
What is milgrain?
The row of tiny beads along the edges of the frame and scrolls. It is an antique jeweler's finish that catches light as a line of small highlights.
How dark is the black ruthenium finish?
Ruthenium finishes to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat jet black. The slight reflectivity keeps the milgrain and scrollwork visible instead of flattening them.
What is the ring made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver throughout, with a black ruthenium finish. No brass or base metal.
Does this ring come with other stones?
Yes. The same Ravenna setting is also made with a Starry Night® center and with natural moss agate. Use the gemstone swatches on this page to switch between them.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 4 through 11, including every half size.
Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Not entirely. The marquise sapphire at the lower point of the frame leaves a gap against a straight band. A contour or chevron band will nest more closely.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
Does it come with a ring box?
Yes. Every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
