The Design
A wide flat band with a single motif: four kites set with their points outward so the stones themselves draw a compass star, with a small round at the center where the four points meet. Everything else is left as plain polished metal, so the star reads from across a room and the stones resolve close up.
At 10 mm it is the widest band we make, and the flat profile with a mirror polish reads as a classic men's wedding band from any distance. It wears equally well on any hand; the star has no front or back. Our guides to men’s engagement rings and unique men’s wedding bands cover the wider category, and the width guide explains what 10 mm looks like on the hand.
Classic flat fit, not comfort fit: the inner wall is flat rather than domed, which sits flush against the finger and reads slightly wider than a comfort-fit band of the same measurement. The Northstar design is also made with the other stone in this family, so a couple can wear the same star in two stones.
The Alexandrite
The four kites are lab-grown alexandrite, grown as chrysoberyl with the same chemistry and 8.5 Mohs hardness as the mined stone. Alexandrite is the color-change gem: these read teal-green to blue under daylight and shift toward violet and raspberry under warm indoor light, and the four faces of the star rarely show the same shade at once. Our alexandrite guide and does synthetic alexandrite change colors cover what to expect from the shift, and lab-grown vs natural alexandrite explains the difference. Alexandrite is a June birthstone; the June birthstone guide has more.
Metal
The band is solid 925 sterling silver with a rhodium finish, the same platinum-group metal used on white gold, giving the bright mirror surface and shielding the silver from tarnishing.
Moissanite or lab-grown diamond accents are available as a custom order, as is this design in solid 14K gold.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the alexandrite real?
It is lab-grown alexandrite: real chrysoberyl with the same chemistry and color change as the mined stone, grown in a lab rather than dug up. It is not a simulant.
Does it change color?
Yes. The kites read teal-green to blue in daylight and shift toward violet and raspberry under warm indoor light. The change is a shift in tone, not a switch between two unrelated colors.
Is alexandrite a birthstone?
Yes. Alexandrite is one of the June birthstones.
Is alexandrite durable enough for a daily band?
Yes. At 8.5 on the Mohs scale it is harder than everything except sapphire, moissanite and diamond, and the kites sit flush to a wide flat band.
Will the silver tarnish?
Not the way bare silver does. The band is solid 925 sterling silver with a rhodium finish, which acts as a barrier against tarnish. After years of daily wear the finish can thin, and the ring can be refinished.
Does it come in gold?
The same Northstar star is made in 14K yellow gold vermeil with lab-created white fire opal kites, and the design can be ordered in solid 14K gold.
Is this a men's ring or unisex?
Both. It is cut on men's sizes 7 to 13 and the star has no front or back, so it wears the same on any hand.
What does classic flat fit mean?
The inside of the band is flat rather than domed. It sits flush against the finger and feels a little wider than a comfort-fit band of the same width.
Is 10 mm very wide?
It is the widest band we make, roughly the width of a fingernail. If you have not worn a wide band before, our width guide shows how it sits on the hand.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 7 through 13, including every half size. If you need a size outside that range, choose the custom size option and we will make it to order.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 25 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. All Aquamarise stones are conflict-free and responsibly sourced, and every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
