The Design
A wide flat band with a single motif: four kites set with their points outward so the stones themselves draw a compass star, with a small round at the center where the four points meet. Everything else is left as plain polished metal, so the star reads from across a room and the stones resolve close up.
At 10 mm it is the widest band we make, and the flat profile with a mirror polish reads as a classic men's wedding band from any distance. It wears equally well on any hand; the star has no front or back. Our guides to men’s engagement rings and unique men’s wedding bands cover the wider category, and the width guide explains what 10 mm looks like on the hand.
Classic flat fit, not comfort fit: the inner wall is flat rather than domed, which sits flush against the finger and reads slightly wider than a comfort-fit band of the same measurement. The Northstar design is also made with the other stone in this family, so a couple can wear the same star in two stones.
The Opal
The four kites are lab-created white fire opal: grown silica with the same stacked-sphere structure as natural opal, which is what produces the play of color. The base is milky white and the flashes run blue, green and orange as the hand moves, so the star changes with every turn. Opal is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale; the kites sit flush to the wide band with the metal rising around them, which keeps their edges protected. Our opal meaning post covers the stone, and the October birthstone guide has more on opal as a gift.
Metal
The band is 14K yellow gold vermeil: real 14K gold over solid 925 sterling silver. The warm gold pulls the orange and green out of the opal's flash. Our guide to caring for vermeil jewelry covers the finish, and what is gold vermeil explains what sets vermeil apart.
Moissanite or lab-grown diamond accents are available as a custom order, as is this design in solid 14K gold.

Care
Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, paying attention to the prongs around the star. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam, and avoid abrasive polishes and chlorine, which wear the gold vermeil. Put the ring on after lotion and fragrance and take it off for swimming and the gym.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the opal real?
It is lab-created opal: grown silica with the same structure and play of color as natural opal, made in a lab rather than mined. It is not glass or resin.
What colors does it flash?
A milky white base with blue, green and orange flashes that move as the hand turns. The four kites rarely show the same flash at once.
Is opal a birthstone?
Yes. Opal is the October birthstone.
Is opal durable enough for a daily band?
Lab-created opal is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than sapphire. The kites sit flush to a wide band with metal rising around them, which protects the edges, but the ring should come off for the gym and heavy work and stay away from chemicals.
Is it real gold?
Yes. The ring is 14K yellow gold vermeil: a layer of real 14K gold over a solid 925 sterling silver core. There is no brass or base metal under it.
Will it turn my skin green?
No. The core is solid sterling silver and the surface is real gold, so there is no copper alloy to react with skin.
Does it come in silver?
The same Northstar star is made in sterling silver with lab-grown alexandrite kites, and the design can be ordered in solid 14K gold.
Is this a men's ring or unisex?
Both. It is cut on men's sizes 7 to 13 and the star has no front or back, so it wears the same on any hand.
What does classic flat fit mean?
The inside of the band is flat rather than domed. It sits flush against the finger and feels a little wider than a comfort-fit band of the same width.
Is 10 mm very wide?
It is the widest band we make, roughly the width of a fingernail. If you have not worn a wide band before, our width guide shows how it sits on the hand.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 7 through 13, including every half size. If you need a size outside that range, choose the custom size option and we will make it to order.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 25 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. All Aquamarise stones are conflict-free and responsibly sourced, and every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
