A butterfly ring in black. Four kite-cut lab-grown lavender sapphires form the wings, set point-out in openwork filigree frames, and two pear-cut lab-created magenta opals sit back to back at the center for the body. Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish.

The Design
The ring is built as one insect seen from above. Two long kites run north and south along the finger and two shorter kites run east and west, all four pointing outward, so the stones themselves draw the wingspan. Between them, two pears meet point to point to make the body, and the ruthenium around each stone is pierced into scrolled filigree so the wings read as lace rather than solid metal. The band is a slim straight shank that disappears under the wings.
It belongs to the dark-romance lane we cover in gothic engagement rings and black rings for women; for the wider field, fantasy engagement rings and non-traditional engagement rings.
The Stones
The four wings are lab-grown sapphire, grown as corundum with the same chemistry and 9 Mohs hardness as a mined sapphire, in a soft lilac-violet. Cut as kites, each one carries a sharp outer point and a flat step-cut face that flashes as a single plane of color rather than sparkling. The sapphire engagement rings guide covers lab-grown versus mined, and the purple gemstones guide places lavender sapphire against amethyst and tanzanite.
The body is lab-created opal in a hot magenta with green and orange play of color across the pears. Lab-created opal is grown silica with the same structure as the natural stone, which is where the color play comes from; it is softer than sapphire, around 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and sits protected between the harder wings. Our opal meaning post covers the stone, and October birthstone guide has more on opal as a gift. Sapphire is the September birthstone, opal the October one.
Metal
Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish, a platinum-group metal that settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat black. Against it the lavender reads cooler and the magenta hotter than either would on polished silver, and the filigree reads as shadow between the stones.
Part of our sapphire engagement rings, opal engagement rings, purple gemstone jewelry and September birthstone collections, alongside the rest of our black ruthenium jewelry and gothic engagement rings.

Care
The sapphire wings are 9 on the Mohs scale; the opal body is the softer part of the ring, so keep it clear of hard knocks and put the ring on after perfume and lotion. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working the brush through the filigree where lotion collects, then dry before storing. No silver polishing cloths or abrasive compounds, which thin the black ruthenium finish; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and household chemicals for the same reason. Take it off for the gym, gardening and heavy cleaning. Our engagement ring care guide covers the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the stones real?
The four wings are lab-grown sapphire: real corundum, grown in a lab rather than mined, not a simulant. The two body stones are lab-created opal, grown silica with the same play of color as natural opal.
What shape are the wing stones?
Kite cut, a four-sided shape with a sharp outer point and a step-cut face. The two along the finger are longer than the two across it, which is what gives the butterfly its wingspan.
What color is lavender sapphire?
A soft lilac-violet, lighter and cooler than amethyst. It reads pale in daylight and deepens a little under warm indoor light.
What color is the opal?
A hot magenta base with green and orange flashes that move as the ring turns.
Is this a birthstone ring?
Two of them. Sapphire is the September birthstone and opal is the October birthstone.
Is opal durable enough for a ring?
Lab-created opal is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so it needs more care than the sapphire wings. It sits low between them, which protects it, but keep it away from hard knocks, chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.
How dark is the black ruthenium finish?
Ruthenium settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat jet black. The slight reflectivity keeps the filigree legible instead of flattening it into a silhouette.
What is the ring made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish. No brass or base metal.
How wide is the ring on the finger?
The wings span the width of the finger and the shank underneath is slim, so it wears as a statement ring without a wide band.
Can I stack it with a band?
Yes. The shank is straight and the wings sit above it, so a slim band stacks against it on either side.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 4 through 11, including every half size. If you need a size outside that range, choose the custom size option and we will make it to order.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. All Aquamarise stones are conflict-free and responsibly sourced, and every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
