A three-piece nesting set built around a 5 × 10 mm lab-grown alexandrite, marquise cut and held north–south in a milgrain frame with marquise accents at each corner. The stone shifts between teal-blue and raspberry-violet as the light changes. A crown band sits above, a star contour band below. Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish.

Three Rings, One Composition
Crown Band
Sits above the engagement ring. A marquise accent at the peak beneath a cluster of round stones, with marquise and round accents sweeping down each shoulder.
Engagement Ring
The marquise center in a milgrain frame, with marquise accents at the four corners and pavé running along the shoulders.
Star Contour Band
Sits below. Five stars along a curved band, each holding a round accent, tracing the lower point of the frame.
The three nest as one composition but wear perfectly well apart — the engagement ring alone, or the engagement ring with either band. If you are looking past a plain solitaire, our guides to fantasy engagement rings and non-traditional engagement rings map the wider field, and what hand an engagement ring goes on covers the question every stacking set eventually raises.
The Alexandrite and Its Color Shift
Alexandrite is the stone that changes color. Under daylight it reads teal to blue-green; under warm indoor light or candlelight it swings to raspberry, violet and plum. The effect is real optics — the mineral absorbs light unevenly across the spectrum, so what you see depends entirely on what is illuminating it.
The shift is fully visible here. Alexandrite set as crushed inlay under resin cannot show it; a faceted stone in an open prong setting like this one shows it clearly. Our piece on whether synthetic alexandrite changes color explains the mechanism.
This stone is lab-grown. Natural alexandrite at 5 × 10 mm is among the rarest gemstones on earth and prices accordingly — the lab-grown material has the same chrysoberyl chemistry and the same behavior. Our comparison of lab-grown versus natural alexandrite lays out the trade-offs. It is set north–south, the most elongating orientation, as our guide to marquise engagement rings explains.
Metal and Stones
All three rings are solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish — a platinum-group metal that settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat black. It is what makes the set read gothic rather than merely dark: the metal recedes and the stones carry the light.
Smaller lab-grown alexandrite marquises flank the center and top the crown band, and they shift with it. The white accents — marquise at the four corners of the frame, pavé along the shoulders, and a round in each star of the contour band — are cubic zirconia. Moissanite or lab-grown diamond accents are available as a custom order.
Part of our alexandrite engagement rings and gothic engagement rings collections, alongside the rest of our black ruthenium jewelry. Alexandrite is a June birthstone — see our birthstone guide — and our guide to gothic wedding rings covers the wider style.

Care
Alexandrite is 8.5 on the Mohs scale and well suited to daily wear. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and household chemicals, which dull the ruthenium finish, and store the set in its velvet box rather than loose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the color shift actually show?
Yes. The stone is faceted and set in open prongs, so light passes through it and the shift is clearly visible — teal-blue in daylight, raspberry-violet under warm indoor light.
Is the alexandrite real?
Yes. It is genuine alexandrite — chrysoberyl — lab-grown rather than mined. Same chemistry, same hardness, same color-change behavior.
What colors does it change between?
Teal to blue-green under daylight and cool white light; raspberry, violet and plum under warm indoor light or candlelight. The strength of the shift depends on the light source.
Do the side stones change color too?
Yes — the marquise accents beside the center stone and at the peak of the crown band are lab-grown alexandrite and shift along with it.
Are the white accent stones diamonds?
No. They are cubic zirconia. Moissanite or lab-grown diamond accents are available as a custom order.
Is alexandrite a birthstone?
Yes — alexandrite is one of the June birthstones, alongside pearl and moonstone.
How dark is the black ruthenium finish?
Ruthenium finishes to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat jet black. The slight reflectivity is what keeps the milgrain and the star detail visible instead of flattening them.
What are the rings made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver throughout, with a black ruthenium finish. No brass or base metal.
How many rings come in the set?
Three: the engagement ring, the crown band that sits above it, and the star contour band that sits below. All three ship together.
Can I wear the rings separately?
Yes. The engagement ring stands on its own, and either band can be worn with it or alone. The three are designed to nest but not to depend on each other.
How big is the center stone?
5 × 10 mm, set north–south so the length runs along the finger. It is a generous marquise and the milgrain frame makes it read larger still.
Do the three rings sit flush?
Yes — the crown band and star band are both contoured to trace the frame of the engagement ring, so the stack closes without gaps.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 4 through 11, including every half size. All three rings are made to the same size.
Can the rings be resized?
Resizing is possible but limited on a nesting set — the three pieces must stay matched, so we keep adjustments within one size. Resizing starts from $45.
Can I have them engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. All Aquamarise stones are conflict-free and responsibly sourced, and every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
