Part crown, part storm cloud. If the salt and pepper diamond ring look has your heart, this kite Herkimer set delivers those smoky, speckled depths in a stone with its own story — because a Herkimer diamond is not a diamond at all. It is a natural, double-terminated quartz crystal whose internal textures resemble frozen lightning, cut to a regal kite silhouette and framed in colorless moissanite. Castlecore romance, told honestly.
The Engagement Ring
A natural kite-cut Herkimer diamond, 7.0 x 10.0 mm, prong-set above colorless moissanite accents in a high-polish, comfort-fit band.
The Matching Band
The second ring of the set, made to order in the same solid metal and size so the pair arrives as one finished bridal look.
The Salt and Pepper Look, Grown in Quartz
Salt and pepper diamonds are loved for their galaxies of dark and light inclusions — and Herkimer diamonds grow the same moody weather inside natural quartz. Each crystal forms with two pointed terminations and its own internal constellation of textures, so no two stones are ever identical. They earn the “diamond” nickname from their glassy clarity and naturally faceted shape, not from their chemistry: this is quartz, around 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and we say so plainly.
Torn between the two stones? Our guide to Herkimer diamonds vs salt and pepper diamonds compares them side by side, and if the speckled aesthetic is new to you, start with what a salt and pepper diamond actually is.
Castlecore Geometry: The Kite Cut
The elongated kite profile rises from the hand like the point of a crown — a silhouette drawn from castlecore aesthetics and vintage heirloom rings, sharpened with modern architectural lines. It lengthens the finger the way a marquise does, but with flat, deliberate facets that suit the Herkimer’s raw character. Explore the full shape family in our kite-cut Herkimer diamond engagement rings, or read how dark-romantic styles came back in our guide to Victorian gothic engagement rings.
Colorless Moissanite, Prong-Set for Light
Surrounding the center, colorless moissanite accents supply the sparkle the smoky quartz deliberately withholds. Moissanite is a real lab-grown gemstone — silicon carbide, 9.25 on the Mohs scale — with more fire than diamond, and here it is precision prong-set for maximum light return. The contrast is the point: raw, cloud-filled crystal at the center, disciplined brilliance at the edges, all in a high-polish, comfort-fit setting.
Solid White Gold or Platinum, Made to Order
Choose your metal from the drop-down: solid 10K, 14K, or 18K white gold, or platinum. 10K is the hardest and most affordable; 14K is the classic everyday balance most couples pick; 18K carries the richest gold content. Platinum is naturally white, hypoallergenic, and the densest of the four. Every option is precious metal all the way through — compare them in our 10K vs 14K vs 18K karat guide, or browse more solid gold rings. Yellow and rose gold are available on request.
One Stone, One Story
Because every Herkimer diamond varies naturally in tone and inclusions, your ring will never have a twin — a quietly meaningful detail for a stone that anchors a proposal. Sizing & Care
Both rings are made to order in your chosen size — measure carefully with our ring size guide before ordering, since sizing can vary slightly between jewelers. To care for the set, wash gently with mild soap, warm water, and a soft brush, then pat dry. Quartz wears beautifully day to day, but it is wise to set the rings aside for heavy lifting, gardening, or gym sessions and to store them separately so harder stones cannot scratch the crystal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Herkimer diamond a real diamond?
No, and we say so plainly. A Herkimer diamond is a natural, double-terminated quartz crystal, around 7.5 on the Mohs scale. It earns the nickname from its glassy clarity and naturally faceted shape, not from its chemistry.
Why does it look like a salt and pepper diamond?
Herkimer crystals grow with internal inclusions and textures that read like the smoky, speckled galaxies inside salt and pepper diamonds. You get that moody aesthetic in a natural quartz crystal at a far gentler price.
What does the set include?
It is a two-ring engagement set: the kite Herkimer engagement ring and its matching band, both made to order in the same solid metal and size, delivered together in a luxury ring box.
Is the center stone natural?
Yes. Every Herkimer diamond we set is a natural quartz crystal, and each one varies in tone and internal inclusions, so no two rings are identical.
Will my stone match the photos exactly?
Very closely, but not identically. Herkimer diamonds form with one-of-a-kind internal textures, so your stone will have its own pattern of inclusions. That uniqueness is the reason many couples choose it.
Which metal should I choose?
Choose 10K white gold for the most durable, budget-friendly pick, 14K for the classic everyday balance most customers select, or 18K for the highest gold content. Choose platinum if you want a naturally white, hypoallergenic metal.
Is platinum worth the upgrade?
If you have sensitive skin or want a metal that is white all the way through, yes. Platinum is denser than gold, hypoallergenic, and its color is naturally permanent.
Are the accent stones diamonds?
No, they are colorless moissanite, a real lab-grown gemstone rated 9.25 on the Mohs scale with even more fire than diamond. They are precision prong-set for maximum light return.
Is quartz durable enough for an engagement ring?
At around 7.5 on the Mohs scale, Herkimer quartz is harder than steel and suited to daily wear with sensible care. It is softer than sapphire or moissanite, so remove the ring for rough work and store it away from harder stones.
Can I wear this set every day?
Yes. The high-polish, comfort-fit bands are designed for daily wear. Treat the quartz center kindly, take the rings off for heavy-duty tasks, and they will stay beautiful for years.
How do I clean the rings?
Use mild soap, warm water, and a soft brush, then pat dry. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can stress the natural inclusions inside the crystal.
Is this set made to order?
Yes. Each set is crafted to order in your chosen metal and size rather than pulled from a shelf, so both rings arrive matched to each other.
Can I get it in yellow or rose gold?
Yes, yellow and rose gold are available on request. Contact us and we will arrange your preferred color.
What comes with my order?
Your two-ring set arrives in a free luxury ring box with free U.S. shipping, and the stones are ethically sourced.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every ring on this page is made in solid gold or platinum — never plated, never gold-filled. Solid gold comes in 10K, 14K and 18K across yellow, white and rose; our platinum is 95% pure, naturally hypoallergenic, and white the whole way through. Available metals vary by design and are listed in the selector above. Our Precious Metal Guide explains how each one wears.
Side by side and brand new, the two look almost identical. The difference shows up over years of wear.
White gold is a gold alloy finished with rhodium for brightness. It sits lighter on the hand and costs less, and the rhodium finish is refreshed every few years to keep it crisp.
Platinum is white all the way through, so there is no finish to renew. It is around 40% denser — noticeably weightier — and over time develops a soft matte patina that many people prefer. It can be polished back to a high shine whenever you like.
Our Platinum vs Gold guide compares durability, cost and upkeep in full.
Solid gold is gold throughout — alloyed for strength, but the same metal at the surface as at the core. Gold vermeil is sterling silver with a layer of gold applied over it, which thins with wear and needs replating to stay bright. Rings on this page are solid gold or platinum only. Our Precious Metal Guide sets out where each makes sense.
Neither tarnishes. Gold and platinum are two of the most stable metals used in fine jewelry, and both hold their color indefinitely. Platinum does develop a satin patina as it is worn — that is surface texture rather than damage, and it polishes out at any time. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush is all either metal asks for; see our Jewelry Care Guide.
Nothing on this page is pulled from a shelf. Each solid gold and platinum ring is cast, set and finished for your order, which takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the design — pavé settings, custom sizing and engraving sit at the longer end. Shipping is added once your ring is finished, and paying for faster shipping speeds up transit only — it does not shorten production. Full timings are on our Shipping & Delivery page.
Use the Size Chart linked beside the Add to Bag button, or our full Ring Size Chart. Because these rings are made to order, we cut your size from the start rather than resizing a stock band — so measure carefully. Your first resizing is free if it is still not right. Most designs can be adjusted, though eternity bands and rings with stones set the whole way around usually cannot.
On most designs, yes — if engraving is available for this ring, a text field appears with the options above. Standard engraving is complimentary: up to 16 characters on women’s rings and 25 on men’s, set in Arial, with a small selection of symbols included. Custom fonts and symbols are $25 and are arranged before you order. See the Engraving page for what is possible. Engraved rings are final sale.
Returns and exchanges are accepted within 14 days of delivery on unworn rings in original condition. Because solid gold and platinum rings are made to order, they are subject to a restocking fee, and engraved pieces are final sale. Full terms are on our Returns & Refunds page. Every ring is also covered by our lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
