The Design
Eilwen is a Welsh name meaning fair and white, and the ring is built tall and slender to match. A 5 × 15 mm marquise sits north to south in six prongs, three times as long as it is wide, so it runs up the finger like a leaf on its stem. A marquise-cut simulated diamond leaf flanks each shoulder with a smaller leaf behind it, and the band splits as it reaches the stone, with a line of round simulated diamonds on each side. Our marquise engagement rings guide covers why the cut reads larger and longer than its carat weight.
The silhouette belongs to the elven and fairy-tale lane we cover in fairy engagement rings and fantasy engagement rings; for the wider field, non-traditional engagement rings.
The Blue Sapphire
The center stone is lab-grown sapphire: genuine corundum, grown in a laboratory, with the same chemistry, hardness and royal blue as a mined sapphire. It is cut as a long marquise, 5 × 15 mm, three times as long as it is wide, and set with the points running along the finger. Sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale and the September birthstone.
Our sapphire engagement rings guide covers lab-grown against mined and what to look for in the color, and the blue gemstones guide places sapphire beside the other blue stones.
Metal and Stones
The ring is solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish, a platinum-group metal that settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat black. Against it the blue reads deeper than it would on silver and the white leaves read brighter.
The center marquise is lab-grown sapphire. The leaf-shaped marquises on the shoulders and the small rounds along the shank are simulated diamond (cubic zirconia). Our moissanite vs cubic zirconia post explains what that material does well and where it falls short of a mined stone.

Care
Sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale and well suited to daily wear, so the ruthenium finish is the part to protect. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working the brush around the leaves where lotion collects, then dry before storing. No silver polishing cloths or abrasive compounds, which thin the black ruthenium; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and household chemicals for the same reason. Store the ring in its velvet box rather than loose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the sapphire real?
It is lab-grown sapphire: real corundum with the same chemistry, hardness and color as a mined sapphire, grown in a laboratory rather than dug up. It is not a simulant.
What color is the stone?
A deep royal blue. Against the black ruthenium it reads darker and richer than it would on silver, with a brighter flash in daylight.
Is sapphire hard enough for an engagement ring?
Yes. Sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale, harder than everything except diamond and moissanite, and it suits daily wear. The ruthenium finish, not the stone, is the part to protect.
Is sapphire a birthstone?
Yes. Sapphire is the September birthstone.
How dark is the black ruthenium finish?
Ruthenium settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat jet black. The slight reflectivity keeps the leaves and the split shank visible instead of flattening them.
What is the ring made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish. No brass or base metal.
How big is the center stone?
5 × 15 mm, marquise cut, set north to south so the length runs along the finger. It is three times as long as it is wide, which is what gives the ring its tall, slender look.
What are the leaf-shaped side stones?
Simulated diamond, which is cubic zirconia. Two marquise leaves sit on each shoulder and a line of small rounds runs down each side of the split shank.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 4 through 11, including every half size.
Does it come with a ring box?
Yes. Every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. All Aquamarise stones are conflict-free and responsibly sourced.
