One ring, two colors. The Ella’s round lab-grown alexandrite reads bluish green under daylight and shifts to purplish red under warm evening light — a genuine color-change gemstone at the heart of this lab alexandrite engagement ring in solid rose gold. A finely detailed band and your choice of moissanite or natural diamond accents frame a stone that never shows the same face twice.
A true color change, shown in the round
Alexandrite’s party trick is real: the stone absorbs light differently depending on the source, so it flips from cool bluish green in sunlight to warm purplish red under candlelight and indoor bulbs. The Ella sets that phenomenon in a classic round cut — 6.5 mm across, roughly 1.2 carats — whose symmetrical facets spread the shift evenly across the whole face of the stone. Where fancy shapes concentrate color in their corners, a round shows the change everywhere at once, which is exactly what you want from a gem you chose for its transformation. It is a quietly traditional silhouette among round engagement rings, carrying a decidedly untraditional stone, and one of the signature designs in our alexandrite engagement rings collection.
The detailed band
The Ella’s band is where the romance lives. Averaging 2.4 mm wide, it carries fine, sculpted detailing along the shoulders, set with approximately 0.3 total carats of accent stones in your choice of D-color moissanite or natural G/H diamonds. The warm blush of rose gold flatters both of alexandrite’s personalities — it deepens the green in daylight and echoes the red by night — which is why this metal has become a favorite pairing across our rose gold rings.
Solid rose gold, in the karat you choose
Every Ella is made to order in solid rose gold all the way through — select your karat from the drop-down menu:
- 10K rose gold — the hardest and most affordable of the three, well suited to everyday wear.
- 14K rose gold — the most popular all-rounder, balancing durability with a warm rose glow.
- 18K rose gold — the richest color and highest gold content, for the most luxurious feel.
Undecided? Our 10K vs 14K vs 18K karat guide compares durability, color, and price in plain language.
A real alexandrite, grown above ground
The Ella’s center stone is lab-grown alexandrite: the same chrysoberyl mineral as mined alexandrite, with the same chemistry, the same 8.5 rating on the Mohs hardness scale, and the same light-driven color change — created in a controlled setting instead of pulled from the earth. Natural alexandrite of this size and clarity is among the rarest gems on the planet; growing it in a lab is what makes a clean, vividly shifting 1.2 carat stone attainable. Our guide to lab-grown vs natural alexandrite covers what shoppers actually need to know, and the alexandrite guide goes deeper into the stone itself.
A June birthstone that means transformation
Alexandrite is a modern June birthstone and a long-standing symbol of transformation, balance, and good fortune — a stone said to carry both halves of a story, day and night, in one crystal. That makes the Ella a natural engagement ring for a love that keeps changing and deepening, and an equally meaningful anniversary or milestone gift; see our June birthstone guide for the full story. Many couples later pair it with a band from our alexandrite wedding bands collection.

Sizing & care
Choose your size from the drop-down menu; half and quarter sizes are offered, and our ring size guide will help you measure at home. Note that sizing tools vary slightly between jewelers — readings can differ by up to half a size, so measuring with our guide is worth the two minutes. At 8.5 on the Mohs scale, alexandrite sits just behind sapphire in hardness and handles daily wear confidently. Clean the ring with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush, then pat dry; store it separately from harder stones like diamonds to keep every facet crisp. Your ring arrives in a complimentary luxury ring box with free USA shipping.
Frequently asked questions
Is the alexandrite in the Ella ring real?
Yes. Lab-grown alexandrite is real alexandrite: the same chrysoberyl mineral as the mined stone, with identical chemistry, hardness, and the genuine light-driven color change. It is grown in a controlled lab environment rather than mined, which is what makes a clean stone of this size attainable.
What colors does the stone actually shift between?
Under daylight and cool white light the stone shows a bluish green; under warm light such as candlelight or indoor bulbs it shifts toward purplish red. The change is driven by the light source, so you will see it move through teal, violet, and magenta moods as your surroundings change.
How big is the center stone?
The round center stone measures 6.5 mm across and weighs approximately 1.2 carats, a classic solitaire presence that sits beautifully on the finger without overwhelming it.
Which rose gold karat should I choose?
10K is the hardest and most affordable, 14K is the most popular balance of durability and color, and 18K carries the richest rose hue with the highest gold content. All three are solid rose gold through and through. Our karat comparison guide on the blog walks through the differences in detail.
What accent stone options are available?
You can choose sparkling D-color moissanite or natural G/H diamonds, each totaling approximately 0.3 carats along the detailed band. The diamonds are I1 clarity and eye-clean, and all our stones are conflict-free.
Is alexandrite durable enough for everyday wear?
Yes. Alexandrite rates 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, harder than emerald, morganite, and aquamarine, and close behind sapphire. With ordinary care it is an excellent choice for a ring you wear daily.
Is this ring solid gold?
Yes. The Ella is crafted in solid 10K, 14K, or 18K rose gold in your chosen karat. It is gold all the way through, so the color is permanent.
How long does it take to receive the ring?
Each Ella is handmade to order. Please allow 3 to 5 weeks for crafting before shipping. Requested modifications may extend the production timeline and adjust pricing.
Can I have the ring engraved?
Yes, complimentary engraving is included with every Ella. You can add up to 16 characters, a date, initials, or a short phrase that stays between the two of you.
How do I find my ring size?
Use our online ring size guide to measure at home. Keep in mind that ring sizers and mandrels vary slightly between jewelers, so your size can differ by up to half a size; half and quarter sizes are available in the drop-down menu.
How should I care for an alexandrite ring?
Clean it with warm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft brush, then rinse and pat dry. Store it separately from harder stones such as diamonds, and remove it for heavy work involving abrasives or harsh chemicals.
Is alexandrite a birthstone?
Yes, alexandrite is a modern birthstone for June, which makes the Ella a meaningful engagement ring or gift for anyone with a June birthday, and a symbolic choice for couples who marked a milestone in that month.
What comes with the ring?
Every Ella arrives in a complimentary luxury ring box with free USA shipping. An optional professional appraisal can be added from the drop-down menu; the appraisal fee is non-refundable once the work has been performed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every ring on this page is made in solid gold or platinum — never plated, never gold-filled. Solid gold comes in 10K, 14K and 18K across yellow, white and rose; our platinum is 95% pure, naturally hypoallergenic, and white the whole way through. Available metals vary by design and are listed in the selector above. Our Precious Metal Guide explains how each one wears.
Side by side and brand new, the two look almost identical. The difference shows up over years of wear.
White gold is a gold alloy finished with rhodium for brightness. It sits lighter on the hand and costs less, and the rhodium finish is refreshed every few years to keep it crisp.
Platinum is white all the way through, so there is no finish to renew. It is around 40% denser — noticeably weightier — and over time develops a soft matte patina that many people prefer. It can be polished back to a high shine whenever you like.
Our Platinum vs Gold guide compares durability, cost and upkeep in full.
Solid gold is gold throughout — alloyed for strength, but the same metal at the surface as at the core. Gold vermeil is sterling silver with a layer of gold applied over it, which thins with wear and needs replating to stay bright. Rings on this page are solid gold or platinum only. Our Precious Metal Guide sets out where each makes sense.
Neither tarnishes. Gold and platinum are two of the most stable metals used in fine jewelry, and both hold their color indefinitely. Platinum does develop a satin patina as it is worn — that is surface texture rather than damage, and it polishes out at any time. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush is all either metal asks for; see our Jewelry Care Guide.
Nothing on this page is pulled from a shelf. Each solid gold and platinum ring is cast, set and finished for your order, which takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the design — pavé settings, custom sizing and engraving sit at the longer end. Shipping is added once your ring is finished, and paying for faster shipping speeds up transit only — it does not shorten production. Full timings are on our Shipping & Delivery page.
Use the Size Chart linked beside the Add to Bag button, or our full Ring Size Chart. Because these rings are made to order, we cut your size from the start rather than resizing a stock band — so measure carefully. Your first resizing is free if it is still not right. Most designs can be adjusted, though eternity bands and rings with stones set the whole way around usually cannot.
On most designs, yes — if engraving is available for this ring, a text field appears with the options above. Standard engraving is complimentary: up to 16 characters on women’s rings and 25 on men’s, set in Arial, with a small selection of symbols included. Custom fonts and symbols are $25 and are arranged before you order. See the Engraving page for what is possible. Engraved rings are final sale.
Returns and exchanges are accepted within 14 days of delivery on unworn rings in original condition. Because solid gold and platinum rings are made to order, they are subject to a restocking fee, and engraved pieces are final sale. Full terms are on our Returns & Refunds page. Every ring is also covered by our lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
