What Paua Shell Is
Paua is the Māori name for the abalone found around the New Zealand coast, and it is the most intensely colored abalone in the world. The iridescence comes from nacre — the same mother-of-pearl material that lines an oyster — built up in microscopic layers that split light into blue, green and violet the way an oil slick does. Nothing is added to it. The shell is cut, shaped and polished, and the color is simply what was already there.
Abalone has a long association with the ocean, with protection, and with calm, which is why it turns up so often in coastal and mermaid-inspired jewelry. Ours is set as a solid free-form cabochon rather than crushed inlay, so you see one continuous sweep of shell rather than a mosaic of chips.
The Setting and the Band
The shell sits in a smooth bezel — a continuous rim of silver folded over the edge of the stone. For a soft material like shell this matters: a bezel protects the vulnerable edges completely, where prongs would leave them exposed to knocks. The stone is set east-west, running across the finger rather than up and down it, which gives the ring its wide, low profile.
The band itself is slim and polished, tapering into the bezel. It stacks easily with plain bands and reads as a statement ring on its own. Care — Shell Is Softer Than Stone
This is the one thing worth knowing before you buy. Shell is nacre, not crystal: at roughly 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale it is far softer than moissanite or sapphire, and it is porous. Treat it more like a pearl than a gemstone.
- Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Nothing abrasive.
- Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, bleach, chlorine and household cleaners — these dull the surface permanently.
- Take it off before swimming, showering or the beach. Prolonged soaking is bad for shell.
- Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. It can crack the shell.
- Store it separately from harder stones, which will scratch it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my ring look exactly like the photo?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. Paua is a natural shell, so the color and pattern change from piece to piece — yours may be bluer, greener, more violet or more silver than the one pictured. The silver, the setting and the shape are identical on every ring. If an exact color match matters to you, this ring is not the right choice.
Can I request a specific color?
We cannot guarantee one. The shells are cut from whole pieces and sorted by size, not by color, so we ship the next ring in your size. If you have a strong preference, tell us in the order notes and we will do what we can, but it is not a promise we can keep.
What is the difference between paua and abalone?
Paua is abalone — specifically the New Zealand species, and the Māori name for it. It is prized because its shell is the most vividly colored abalone in the world. Anything described as paua is abalone; not all abalone is paua.
Is the color painted or dyed?
No. The blue and green iridescence is the natural nacre of the shell, created by microscopic layers that scatter light. Nothing is added, printed or dyed. The shell is only cut and polished.
Is it a real shell or a resin imitation?
Real shell. It is a solid cut piece of paua set into the bezel, not a resin dome, a printed sticker or crushed chips in epoxy.
How durable is it for everyday wear?
Shell is soft — around 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale — so it scratches more easily than a gemstone. The bezel protects the edges, which is the most vulnerable part, but this is a ring to take off for gardening, gym work, cleaning and swimming. Treated that way it lasts beautifully.
Can I wear it in water?
Brief contact with water is fine, but do not swim, shower or bathe in it. Shell is porous, and chlorine, salt water and soap residue will dull the surface over time.
What is the ring made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver throughout, hallmarked, with a rhodium finish for a bright white surface. No brass or base metal.
Will the silver tarnish?
The rhodium finish acts as a barrier, so it resists the darkening untreated sterling develops. The finish does wear thin after years of daily wear — we can refinish the ring when it does.
Can it be resized?
Within about one size. Resizing involves heat near a set stone, and shell does not tolerate heat well, so we keep adjustments small and work away from the bezel. Resizing starts from $45 — ordering the correct size is much better.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout. Engraved items are final sale.
