Wear it to the office and it is a cool teal geometric stone in an icy setting. Wear it to dinner and the same stone burns purplish red. This hexagon alexandrite ring pairs a lab-grown, color-changing alexandrite with solid white gold or platinum — a naturally white frame that lets the stone do all the talking. See where it sits among our alexandrite engagement rings, then read on for the details.
Cool metal, cooler stone
White metal is the purist’s choice for alexandrite. Against a naturally white band, the stone’s daytime phase reads its truest bluish green, and nothing warms or muddies the transition as the light changes — from teal under daylight to violet, magenta, and finally purplish red under evening bulbs and candlelight. Our guide to how alexandrite changes color covers why the shift happens and how to show it off.
The stone itself is a lab-grown alexandrite: real alexandrite, chemically identical to the mined gem, rated 8.5 on the Mohs scale, and grown under conditions that produce the strong, unmistakable color change the species is prized for.
The hexagon: geometry with a purpose
Six straight sides and broad, open facets make the hexagon a display case for body color — the ideal stage for a gem that changes it. At 7.0 x 7.0 mm and approximately 1.2 carats, the stone holds real presence on a slim 1.6 mm band without overwhelming the hand. If you are drawn to structured, modern lines, our hexagon engagement rings and wider geometric engagement rings collections make good comparison shopping.
Four solid metals, one decision
Every version of this ring is solid precious metal all the way through:
- 10K white gold — the hardest and most affordable gold option, with excellent scratch resistance.
- 14K white gold — the most popular all-rounder, balancing durability, weight, and value.
- 18K white gold — the highest gold content, for a softer, more luxurious feel.
- Platinum — naturally white, the densest and most substantial choice, and hypoallergenic for sensitive skin.
Undecided between karats? Our 10K vs 14K vs 18K karat guide lays out the trade-offs in durability, color, and price.
Accents: fire or tradition
Choose moissanite accents (D color, VVS1 clarity) for maximum brilliance and fire, or natural diamond accents (G/H color, I1 eye-clean clarity, conflict-free) for the traditional pedigree. Either way, the small stones frame the hexagon with a fine line of white sparkle that reads elegant rather than busy.
Rarer than the classics
Plenty of rings hold a blue stone or a red one; very few hold both in a single gem. Alexandrite — June’s birthstone and the gem of the 55th anniversary — is scarcer in nature than sapphire or ruby, and its two-in-one character is why collectors treat it as a category of its own. If you are torn between this and a classic blue stone, our comparison of alexandrite vs sapphire is an honest look at which feels more unique on the hand.

Sizing & care
Pick your size from the drop-down menu, and confirm it first with our ring size guide — measurements can differ by up to half a size between jewelers’ tools, and a made-to-order ring is worth measuring twice.
Alexandrite’s 8.5 Mohs hardness makes this a genuine everyday ring. Wash it occasionally with warm water and mild soap, dry it with a soft cloth, and store it away from diamonds and other harder stones. Your ring arrives in a free luxury ring box, with free shipping across the USA.
Frequently asked questions
Is this real alexandrite?
Yes — it is lab-grown alexandrite, which is real alexandrite. It shares the mined gem’s chemistry, its 8.5 Mohs hardness, and its signature color change; the lab origin is what makes a stone with this strong a shift accessible.
What does the color change look like in practice?
In daylight or under cool office lighting the stone is bluish green to teal. Under warm light — restaurant bulbs, candlelight — it moves through violet and magenta to purplish red. The shift is visible in normal life, not just under test lamps.
How is alexandrite different from sapphire?
Color-change is the headline: a sapphire holds one color, while alexandrite lives in two. Alexandrite is also rarer in nature. Sapphire is slightly harder (9 vs 8.5 Mohs), but both are well suited to daily wear.
Should I choose white gold or platinum?
White gold offers three karat levels and the lighter price; platinum is naturally white metal all the way through, denser, more substantial on the hand, and hypoallergenic. If you have sensitive skin or want the heaviest feel, choose platinum.
Which white gold karat is most durable?
10K is the hardest and most scratch-resistant, 14K balances hardness with higher gold content, and 18K is the richest and softest. All three are solid white gold throughout.
What are the exact stone dimensions?
The hexagon-cut alexandrite measures 7.0 x 7.0 mm and weighs approximately 1.2 carats.
Why pick a hexagon over a classic round?
The hexagon’s broad, open facets emphasize body color — the very thing a color-change stone is about — and its six straight sides give the ring a structured, contemporary look that stands apart from round solitaires.
Moissanite or diamond accents — which should I pick?
Moissanite accents (D, VVS1) deliver more fire and brilliance per dollar; natural diamond accents (G/H, I1 eye-clean, conflict-free) carry the traditional heirloom cachet. Visually both read as bright white sparkle framing the center stone.
Can I wear this ring every day?
Yes. At 8.5 Mohs, alexandrite outranks nearly every colored gemstone for hardness, and solid white gold and platinum are proven daily-wear metals. Remove it for heavy or abrasive work and it will stay beautiful for decades.
Is the ring hypoallergenic?
The platinum version is naturally hypoallergenic and the safest choice for sensitive skin. Solid gold suits most wearers well; if you react to alloy metals, choose platinum from the drop-down menu.
Does engraving cost extra?
No — complimentary engraving of up to 16 characters is included with every ring.
When will my ring arrive?
Each ring is handcrafted to order — please allow 3–5 weeks for production. Requested modifications can extend the timeline and adjust pricing.
How do I make sure I order the right size?
Use our ring size guide at aquamarise.com/pages/find-your-size before checkout. Jewelers’ sizers and mandrels can disagree by up to half a size, so measuring against our guide avoids surprises.
Are other gemstones or an appraisal available?
Yes on both counts. Contact us for a custom quote on a different gemstone, and add the optional appraisal from the drop-down menu — note the appraisal fee is non-refundable once the work is done.
✨ Production time

Frequently Asked Questions
Every ring on this page is made in solid gold or platinum — never plated, never gold-filled. Solid gold comes in 10K, 14K and 18K across yellow, white and rose; our platinum is 95% pure, naturally hypoallergenic, and white the whole way through. Available metals vary by design and are listed in the selector above. Our Precious Metal Guide explains how each one wears.
Side by side and brand new, the two look almost identical. The difference shows up over years of wear.
White gold is a gold alloy finished with rhodium for brightness. It sits lighter on the hand and costs less, and the rhodium finish is refreshed every few years to keep it crisp.
Platinum is white all the way through, so there is no finish to renew. It is around 40% denser — noticeably weightier — and over time develops a soft matte patina that many people prefer. It can be polished back to a high shine whenever you like.
Our Platinum vs Gold guide compares durability, cost and upkeep in full.
Solid gold is gold throughout — alloyed for strength, but the same metal at the surface as at the core. Gold vermeil is sterling silver with a layer of gold applied over it, which thins with wear and needs replating to stay bright. Rings on this page are solid gold or platinum only. Our Precious Metal Guide sets out where each makes sense.
Neither tarnishes. Gold and platinum are two of the most stable metals used in fine jewelry, and both hold their color indefinitely. Platinum does develop a satin patina as it is worn — that is surface texture rather than damage, and it polishes out at any time. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush is all either metal asks for; see our Jewelry Care Guide.
Nothing on this page is pulled from a shelf. Each solid gold and platinum ring is cast, set and finished for your order, which takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the design — pavé settings, custom sizing and engraving sit at the longer end. Shipping is added once your ring is finished, and paying for faster shipping speeds up transit only — it does not shorten production. Full timings are on our Shipping & Delivery page.
Use the Size Chart linked beside the Add to Bag button, or our full Ring Size Chart. Because these rings are made to order, we cut your size from the start rather than resizing a stock band — so measure carefully. Your first resizing is free if it is still not right. Most designs can be adjusted, though eternity bands and rings with stones set the whole way around usually cannot.
On most designs, yes — if engraving is available for this ring, a text field appears with the options above. Standard engraving is complimentary: up to 16 characters on women’s rings and 25 on men’s, set in Arial, with a small selection of symbols included. Custom fonts and symbols are $25 and are arranged before you order. See the Engraving page for what is possible. Engraved rings are final sale.
Returns and exchanges are accepted within 14 days of delivery on unworn rings in original condition. Because solid gold and platinum rings are made to order, they are subject to a restocking fee, and engraved pieces are final sale. Full terms are on our Returns & Refunds page. Every ring is also covered by our lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
