What the metals are
Genuine 925 sterling silver is a solid alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper all the way through, so the metal is the same at the surface as it is at the core. Gold vermeil builds on that same sterling base with a 2.5 micron layer of 10K-or-finer gold, the thickness required by the US FTC standard, while 14K gold is 58.5% pure and stamped 585.
