Tungsten carbide and titanium are far harder than precious metals, and that hardness is the point — it is why the band keeps its finish. It also means these rings cannot be cut and stretched the way a gold or silver ring can.

So we do it the other way round: size exchanges are free. Send the ring back within 14 days unworn and we will send the correct size out. Measure at home first with our Ring Size Chart, and if you are between sizes, size up — comfort-fit bands sit slightly snugger than a flat band. Engraved rings are the one exception, as each is cut specifically for you.

Tungsten carbide sits around 9 on the Mohs scale — roughly four times harder than titanium and second only to diamond among materials used in jewellery. In practice that means it shrugs off the everyday knocks that leave a gold band looking tired within a year: tools, keys, a steering wheel, a gym bar.

It is not indestructible. Because it is hard rather than soft, tungsten resists scratching but can chip or crack under a sharp, heavy impact — the trade-off that comes with the hardness. Black finishes are surface treatments and will show wear at high-contact points over years, which is normal for the material.

Yes. Our tungsten carbide is nickel-free and bound with cobalt-free binders, so it is safe for sensitive skin and a common choice for anyone who reacts to the nickel in white gold or cheaper alloys. Titanium is hypoallergenic too, and lighter on the hand.

Tungsten is dense and substantial, with real weight to it, and it holds a mirror polish far longer. Choose it if you want the band to feel like something.

Titanium is roughly half the weight and more forgiving of impact — it dents rather than chips. Choose it if you work with your hands, or simply do not want to feel the ring.

Yes — and it is worth knowing how, because the method is different. A tungsten band is not sawn off like a gold one; medical staff crack it with a standard vice-grip or ring-cracker tool, which fractures the ring cleanly and releases it in seconds. Every A&E department is equipped for it.

It is one of the quieter advantages of the material: a gold ring has to be cut through, which takes longer on a swollen finger.

Warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Tungsten does not react with air or water, so there is nothing to polish out and no finish to renew on a natural tungsten band.

For black, rose-tone and other plated finishes, treat the surface as you would any fine finish: avoid abrasives and harsh chemicals, and take the ring off for heavy manual work. Our Jewelry Care Guide has the detail.
