Solid 14K white gold — the heirloom tier
This is the solid 14K white gold version of our Fire Queen marquise ruby engagement ring. "Solid gold" means the entire ring is gold alloy throughout — no plating, no gold-filled construction, no sterling silver core, no rhodium finish layer. 14K white gold is gold alloyed with palladium and other white metals to produce the cool bright white tone, hard enough for daily wear, and built to last indefinitely.
The practical difference vs the sterling silver version: a solid 14K white gold ring is built to last a lifetime. It doesn't need replating, doesn't wear through, and holds resale and inheritance value in a way that lighter constructions don't. This is the version you choose when you want the engagement ring to outlast you — not just for the duration of the marriage, but for generations after. The cool white-metal palette is preserved from the sterling silver version (so the saturated red-and-black color story stays consistent), but the underlying material is dramatically more substantial.
Why white gold over yellow or rose for this specific design: white gold continues the cool-metal palette that lets the ruby and onyx carry the entire color story without warm-metal contamination. Yellow gold would shift the design into vintage-classical territory; rose gold would soften it into romantic register. White gold preserves the gothic/dark-romance intent while elevating the construction to heirloom tier.
About the lab-grown ruby
The center stone is real lab-grown ruby — actual corundum (aluminum oxide with trace chromium), the same mineral as natural mined ruby and natural mined sapphire. Same chemistry, same hardness (9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond), same optical properties as natural mined ruby. The only difference is controlled laboratory origin rather than mining.
This ruby sits at the saturated red end of the ruby color spectrum — the classical "blood ruby" tone that ruby has been famous for across centuries of fine jewelry. The marquise cut (a hybrid of round brilliant facets at each end converging to two pointed tips) draws the eye vertically along the finger and gives the saturated red color real visible presence on the hand.
For buyers who want natural mined ruby specifically — for the cultural significance, rarity, or the fully all-natural-stones bridal piece — we offer a natural mined ruby upgrade at additional cost. Natural mined ruby at this size with comparable color saturation commands a significant price premium over lab-grown, but it's available on the heirloom-tier solid gold version. Message us before ordering for a custom quote on the natural ruby upgrade.
About the natural black onyx accents
The dark accent stones flanking each shoulder of the marquise center (and the small accents anchoring the upper and lower kite-frame apex points) are natural black onyx — a variety of chalcedony quartz with a deep opaque black body color. Most commercial black onyx, including the stones in this ring, is heat-treated and dyed to achieve uniform black saturation from the natural grey-to-banded chalcedony rough. The treatment is permanent, stable, and industry-standard for black onyx. The underlying material is real natural chalcedony quartz.
Important honesty: these are not black diamonds. The dark accents are real natural black onyx, an entirely different material from diamond. At the solid 14K white gold heirloom tier, however, we offer two black-stone upgrade pathways for buyers who want a more rare or precious accent material:
- Lab-grown black diamond: real diamond (same carbon chemistry, same Mohs 10 hardness as colorless diamond), grown in a lab and chemically treated to produce the opaque black body. More accessible than natural black diamond, full lab-grown traceability.
- Natural mined black diamond: real natural mined diamond with naturally opaque black body color from intense graphite/sulfide inclusion content. The genuine rare-stone version. Significant price premium over both black onyx and lab-grown black diamond.
Message us before ordering to discuss either black diamond upgrade. Default at this listing is the natural black onyx as photographed — the visual reading (deep opaque black against the saturated red ruby) is comparable across all three black-stone options.
About the Celtic butterfly lotus band
The open metalwork band is built on a Celtic knot framework, with two distinct readable motifs depending on how the eye traces the silhouette:
- Celtic knot — the twisted vine pattern flowing down each side of the band's shoulders is classical Celtic knotwork, with interlacing loops referencing the eternity-and-continuity symbolism that's been part of Celtic jewelry tradition for over a thousand years. The intertwining lines have no beginning and no end — visual metaphor for the endless connection between two people.
- Butterfly wings — read horizontally, the open metalwork at each side of the marquise center reads as paired butterfly wings flanking the ruby. The Celtic knot becomes the wing pattern; the marquise ruby becomes the butterfly's body at the center of the wings. Butterfly symbolism connects to transformation, rebirth, and metamorphosis — appropriate engagement-ring symbolism for moving from one chapter of life into the next.
- Lotus petals — read vertically, the upper and lower kite-frame apex points (with their pointed black onyx accents) extend up and down from the marquise center like the unfolding petals of a lotus flower in bloom. Lotus symbolism connects to purity, enlightenment, spiritual awakening, and the lotus rising from muddy waters into pure bloom — appropriate symbolism for a relationship that grows through challenges into beauty.
In solid 14K white gold, the open metalwork reads with more substantial weight and presence than the same pattern in sterling silver — the metal's density gives the open vine pattern a fuller, heirloom feel on the finger. The design reads as all three motifs simultaneously rather than as one strict interpretation. This is part of the appeal of layered symbolic metalwork — different viewers see different things, and the ring's meaning grows over time as the wearer notices new readings.
About the gothic / dark-fairy aesthetic register
The combination of saturated blood-red ruby + deep black onyx + Celtic open knotwork + butterfly/lotus motifs positions this ring firmly in the gothic-romantic / dark-fairy / witchy aesthetic register. This isn't traditional bridal — it's the engagement ring choice for buyers drawn to alternative bridal aesthetics where darkness and saturation are part of the design intent rather than something to soften or apologize for.
Closely related aesthetics this ring fits cleanly: gothic romance, dark cottagecore, witchy bridal, vampire bridal, dark fae / dark fairy, and pagan / Celtic neo-traditional. The "Fire Queen" naming captures the design intent — this is a ring for someone choosing to embrace the saturated and intentional rather than the soft and subtle. The solid 14K white gold tier preserves that intent while adding the gravity of heirloom construction.

How to wear it
- Engagement ring — the primary role. The solid 14K gold tier elevates the design to unmistakable heirloom status while preserving the gothic-romantic aesthetic intent
- Promise ring — solid gold construction and substantial marquise center give the ring the full weight of a lifetime commitment piece
- Anniversary or milestone heirloom gift — ruby is the traditional 15th and 40th wedding anniversary stone. The black onyx adds depth-of-symbolism (grounding, protection, transformation). Solid 14K gold tier makes this appropriate for major anniversaries or generational gifts
- July birthstone heirloom gift — ruby is the July birthstone, layering an additional gift-occasion symbolism onto the design
- Right-hand statement ring — the saturated palette works equally well as a non-bridal statement piece for buyers drawn to gothic-romantic aesthetics in heirloom jewelry
- Symbolic ring — for those who specifically want the layered Celtic + butterfly + lotus symbolism (continuity + transformation + spiritual awakening), this ring carries it explicitly rather than abstractly
For an engagement ring pairing, this ring stacks beautifully with a curved or chevron contour wedding band — the marquise's pointed orientation gives a contour band natural nesting room around the center stone. Match in solid 14K white gold for a unified heirloom stack, or contrast with solid yellow gold or rose gold contour bands for a deliberate two-tone bridal look. Celtic knot bands, twisted-rope bands, or matching butterfly/lotus-motif bands stack well alongside.

Sizing & care
Standard sizes 3–10 (US) available in the dropdown. Larger and smaller sizes are available on request — message us before ordering. Half and quarter sizes available. Sizing can vary slightly between jewelers and mandrels — up to half a size — so if you've been sized recently elsewhere, check our sizing guide before ordering or message us for a complimentary ring sizer.
For care, the ring has two stone types with different durability profiles. The ruby center sits at Mohs 9 — one of the most durable engagement ring stones available, second only to diamond. The black onyx accents sit at Mohs 6.5–7, comparable to moss agate; softer and require more careful handling. Across both: avoid impact on hard surfaces, harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and extreme temperature changes (the heat-treatment process leaves onyx more sensitive to thermal shock). Clean with warm water and a soft brush; skip jewelry cleaners and ultrasonics on this ring.
Solid 14K white gold doesn't need replating and holds its tone indefinitely with normal wear. A soft jewelry cloth keeps the white gold bright. The marquise's pointed tips are the most vulnerable parts of the center stone — avoid impact on hard surfaces. Store the ring separately from other jewelry so the prongs don't catch on other pieces.
Frequently asked questions
Is this ring solid gold or gold plated?
Solid 14K white gold throughout — no plating, no gold-filled construction, no sterling silver core, no rhodium finish layer. The entire ring is white gold alloy. Solid gold is the heirloom-tier construction: built to last a lifetime, never needs replating, holds resale and inheritance value.
What's the difference between this and the sterling silver version?
Same design, one significant structural upgrade: the metal goes from sterling silver with rhodium finish to solid 14K white gold throughout. The cool white-metal palette is preserved (so the saturated red-and-black color story stays consistent), but the construction is now heirloom-tier — built to last a lifetime without replating, holding resale and inheritance value. Additional optional upgrades available at this tier: natural mined ruby center, lab-grown or natural mined black diamond accents.
Is the ruby real?
Yes — real lab-grown ruby. Lab-grown ruby is genuine corundum (aluminum oxide with trace chromium), the same mineral as natural mined ruby. Same chemistry, same hardness (Mohs 9, second only to diamond), same optical properties as natural mined ruby. The only difference is controlled laboratory origin.
Can I upgrade to natural mined ruby?
Yes, at additional cost. Lab-grown ruby is the default at this heirloom tier because it pairs the durability and color of real ruby with significantly more accessible pricing than natural mined ruby at this carat size. If you want natural mined ruby specifically — for the cultural significance, rarity, or the fully all-natural-stones bridal piece — message us before ordering for a custom quote on the upgrade. Natural mined ruby commands a significant price premium but is available at this tier.
What's the difference between lab-grown and natural ruby?
Both are real ruby — same chemistry, hardness, color, optics. Lab-grown is created in months under controlled lab conditions; natural forms over millions of years underground. Lab-grown is dramatically more accessible at this size, has more consistent color, and has full traceability with no mining footprint. Natural ruby commands a price premium for rarity and mined origin. Visually they're often indistinguishable without specialized testing.
Are the dark accent stones black diamonds?
No, by default — the dark accents are natural black onyx, a variety of chalcedony quartz with a deep opaque black body. Most commercial black onyx is heat-treated and dyed for uniform black saturation, industry standard. At this solid 14K white gold heirloom tier, however, we offer two black-stone upgrade pathways for buyers wanting the more rare or precious material:
Lab-grown black diamond — real diamond (same carbon chemistry, Mohs 10 hardness), lab-grown, chemically treated to produce the opaque black body. More accessible than natural black diamond.
Natural mined black diamond — real natural mined diamond with naturally opaque black from graphite/sulfide inclusion content. Significant price premium. The genuine rare-stone version.
Message us before ordering to discuss either upgrade.
Is the black onyx natural?
Yes — real natural chalcedony quartz. The black color in commercial onyx jewelry is typically achieved through heat treatment and color stabilization of the natural grey/banded chalcedony, which is the industry standard. The stone is natural mined material; the treatment refines the color to uniform deep black. Permanent and stable.
What does the Celtic + butterfly + lotus symbolism mean together?
The design layers three symbolic registers: Celtic knot (eternity, continuity, endless connection), butterfly wings (transformation, rebirth, metamorphosis), and lotus petals (purity, enlightenment, the lotus rising from muddy waters into bloom). For an engagement ring, the combination reads as "endless connection through ongoing transformation and growth." Uniquely layered symbolism appropriate for relationships that are committed without being static.
Why is it called "Fire Queen"?
The saturated blood-red ruby reads as fire — the original "fire" stone in fine jewelry tradition. Combined with the dramatic black accent stones, the Celtic open metalwork, and the marquise cut's regal vertical silhouette, the design reads as a queen's regalia rather than a soft bridal piece. The "Fire Queen" naming captures the design intent: for someone choosing to embrace the saturated and intentional rather than the soft and subtle.
Why white gold over yellow or rose gold for this design?
White gold continues the cool-metal palette that lets the ruby and onyx carry the entire color story without warm-metal contamination. Yellow gold would shift the design into vintage-classical territory; rose gold would soften it into romantic register. White gold preserves the gothic/dark-romance intent of the design while elevating the construction to heirloom tier. That said, yellow and rose gold versions are available on request for buyers who specifically want those metal-aesthetic interpretations.
How big is the center ruby?
Marquise cut, approximately 0.6–0.8 carats. The marquise cut spreads wider and longer than a round of the same carat weight, so the stone reads larger on the finger than the carat number alone would suggest. The vertical orientation visually elongates the finger and gives the ruby commanding presence at the center of the design.
How durable is the ring for daily wear?
The ruby center is one of the most durable engagement ring stones available — Mohs 9, second only to diamond. Black onyx is softer (Mohs 6.5–7), comparable to moss agate. If you upgrade the accents to lab-grown or natural black diamond, those sit at Mohs 10 — fully equal to the center stone in durability. With sensible care across either default or upgraded accent stones, the ring holds up well as daily wear.
What does ruby symbolize?
Ruby has been associated for centuries with passion, love, vitality, courage, protection, and life force. In wedding traditions specifically, ruby is the traditional 15th and 40th wedding anniversary stone, and the July birthstone. The saturated red is symbolically associated with intense romantic love, passion, and the courage to commit fully.
What does black onyx symbolize?
Black onyx has been associated across cultures with grounding, protection, banishing negative energy, transformation through hardship, and standing firm under pressure. As an accent stone in an engagement ring, the onyx adds protective and grounding symbolism that balances the ruby's passionate intensity. The pairing reads as "passionate love grounded in protection."
How does engraving work?
Complimentary engraving up to 16 characters is included. You can specify the text at checkout or message us with the engraving details before ordering. Engraving is interior (inside the band), the standard placement for engagement ring engravings.
Can I get this in 14K yellow or rose gold instead?
Yes — both are available on request at the same construction. Yellow gold shifts the aesthetic toward vintage-classical (the saturated ruby + warm yellow gold reads as ancient royal jewelry); rose gold softens the aesthetic into romantic (the ruby + onyx + rose gold reads as dark romance with warmth). 18K upgrades (white, yellow, or rose) are also available at additional cost. Message us before ordering.
Will this ring stack with a wedding band?
Yes. The marquise's pointed orientation gives a contour or chevron wedding band natural nesting room around the center stone. Match in solid 14K white gold for a unified heirloom stack, or contrast with solid yellow or rose gold contour bands for a deliberate two-tone bridal look. Celtic knot bands, twisted-rope bands, or matching butterfly/lotus-motif bands stack well alongside.
How long until my ring ships?
Made to order, 2–6 week production timeline. Modifications (different metal, custom engraving, natural ruby upgrade, black diamond accent upgrade, custom sizing) may extend the timeline. We'll confirm production timing when your order is placed.
Should I add the appraisal?
The optional appraisal is recommended if you plan to insure the ring or want an independent valuation document for your records. Most insurance providers require a written appraisal to schedule the ring on a jewelry policy. The appraisal cost is non-refundable once the work has been performed, so add it at checkout only if you know you'll use it.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. Lab-grown ruby has no mining footprint. Natural black onyx is ethically sourced and conflict-free chalcedony quartz. If you upgrade to natural mined ruby or natural mined black diamond, we source from ethical conflict-free mines with verified fair-labor practices.
What's included in the box?
The ring, a free luxury velvet jewelry box, and a care card. Free USA shipping.
