IGI Certification Included
Every ring at this listing ships with the original IGI (International Gemological Institute) certification report for the center stone, documenting the diamond's specific 4Cs grading (color, clarity, cut, carat weight) and confirming lab-grown origin. The certification is your independent third-party verification that the stone matches the specifications described — and is the standard documentation required by jewelry insurance providers to schedule the ring on a policy.
About the IGI-certified lab-grown diamond center
The center stone is a real diamond — same chemistry (pure carbon arranged in the diamond crystal structure), same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale, the hardest gemstone), same optical properties as a natural mined diamond. The only difference is controlled laboratory origin rather than mining. Lab-grown diamond is produced in advanced laboratories using either chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high pressure high temperature (HPHT) growth techniques — the resulting crystal is chemically and structurally identical to a natural mined diamond.
This diamond is specified at the top tier of the 4Cs:
- Color: D — the most desirable color grade for white diamond. Colorless, with no perceptible yellow or brown tint. D is the top of the GIA/IGI color scale.
- Clarity: VVS — Very, Very Slightly Included. Inclusions are extremely difficult to detect even under 10x magnification by a trained gemologist. Eye-clean by an enormous margin and considered very high clarity in the diamond grading hierarchy (only Internally Flawless and Flawless are higher).
- Cut: Oval — 6×8mm, classical oval brilliant facet pattern. Approximately 1.5 carats.
- Hardness: 10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest gemstone available, ideal for daily wear engagement rings.
- Certification: IGI — International Gemological Institute, one of the major independent gemological labs. The certification report ships with the ring.
D color + VVS clarity is the top tier of diamond specification — significantly above the "good enough" specs most lab-grown diamond engagement rings use. The choice matters: at this grade combination, the stone reads as crystalline pure white with no perceptible color cast, inclusions are invisible to the unaided eye, and the diamond holds its highest possible value among lab-grown stones.
Why IGI certification matters
IGI (International Gemological Institute) is one of the major independent gemological laboratories, alongside GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and AGS (American Gem Society). IGI specifically has become the dominant certifier of lab-grown diamonds because their lab-grown grading program has been the most extensively developed in the lab-grown space.
The certification provides three concrete benefits:
- Third-party verification: the stone's specifications (D color, VVS clarity, carat weight, cut) are independently confirmed by gemologists who have no commercial interest in the ring. You're not just trusting our claim; you have a separate institution backing it up.
- Insurance scheduling: most jewelry insurance providers require a written gemological certification to schedule a ring on a jewelry policy. The IGI report meets that requirement.
- Resale documentation: if the ring is ever resold, the IGI certification provides the documentation needed to validate the stone's grading independently — significantly more valuable in the secondary market than an uncertified stone.
The certification report ships with the ring in a sealed protective sleeve, with the certification number engraved on the diamond's girdle (using laser inscription too small to see with the naked eye but visible under magnification). The inscribed number ties the physical stone to the certification document, preventing certificate-and-stone swaps.
Lab-grown diamond vs natural mined diamond
Both are real diamond — same chemistry, same hardness, same optical properties. The differences are origin and price:
- Lab-grown diamond is created in months under controlled laboratory conditions. Production scales mean lab-grown diamonds at any given 4Cs grade are significantly more accessible than natural mined diamonds at the same grade — often 30–60% of the equivalent natural stone's price at this carat size.
- Natural mined diamond forms over billions of years underground, then is mined and brought to market. The price premium reflects mining scarcity, cultural significance, and the resale market for natural mined stones (which is more established than the lab-grown resale market).
For buyers who want a real diamond engagement ring at the top tier of 4Cs specifications without the natural-mined price tag, lab-grown is the practical choice. The visual experience, durability, and daily-wear behavior are identical to a natural mined diamond at the same grade. If you specifically want natural mined diamond at this design, we can quote it as a custom order — significant price premium, but the option is available.
About the natural black onyx trillion accents
The two dark accent stones flanking the oval diamond center (one at each side at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions) are trillion-cut natural black onyx — real natural chalcedony quartz with a deep opaque black body. Most commercial black onyx, including the stones in this ring, is heat-treated and dyed to achieve uniform black saturation from natural grey/banded chalcedony rough. The treatment is permanent, stable, and industry-standard for black onyx. The underlying material is genuine natural chalcedony quartz.
Important honesty: these are not black diamonds. The trillion accents are real natural black onyx, an entirely different material from diamond (chalcedony quartz vs carbon). Black diamonds at this size and quantity would significantly increase the ring's price. The visual reading is comparable (deep opaque black against the white diamond center) at an accessible price point.
For buyers wanting a fully-diamond ring (white lab-grown diamond center + black diamond accents instead of black onyx), we offer two black diamond upgrade pathways: lab-grown black diamond (real diamond, Mohs 10, lab-grown, chemically treated to opaque black) or natural mined black diamond (real natural mined diamond with naturally opaque black from intense graphite/sulfide inclusions). Message us before ordering to discuss either upgrade.
About the lab-grown diamond cluster halos (top + bottom)
The graduated round accent stones rising above and descending below the center oval are also lab-grown diamond — the same material as the center stone, just at smaller carat sizes for the accent role. Three diamonds at the top (one larger center, two smaller flanking) and three at the bottom (one larger center, two smaller flanking). The symmetrical arrangement reads as art deco — the geometric balance and graduated proportioning are signature art deco design language from the 1920s and 30s.
The lab-grown diamond cluster halos serve a practical function alongside their design role: they make the ring's stone composition fully diamond-throughout for the white stones (center + halos), with only the dark onyx accents using a different material. The result is a ring where the white stones are all real diamond rather than a mix of diamond center + simulated accents. For buyers comparing this against typical solid gold lab-grown diamond rings (which often use diamond center + CZ or moissanite accents), this listing's all-diamond-white-stones specification is a meaningful upgrade.
The accent diamonds in the cluster halos are matched to the center stone's color grade (D color) and graded at SI clarity or better — typical for accent diamond setting at this size where individual stone certifications would be impractical but quality consistency across the matched set is maintained.
About the milgrain bezel setting
The oval lab-grown diamond is set in a bezel with milgrain detail — the stone is enclosed by a continuous gold rim that holds the perimeter rather than the usual claw prongs, and the gold rim itself is finished with a fine row of beaded "milgrain" detail. Both elements are vintage-jewelry references:
- Bezel setting — protects the stone (no prongs to catch or break), gives the stone a clean architectural silhouette, and makes the stone face larger by visually framing it. The bezel setting has been used in jewelry since antiquity but became especially associated with art deco and Edwardian bridal jewelry.
- Milgrain detail — the fine beaded border around the bezel rim is a signature Edwardian and Victorian metalwork technique. It softens the bezel's edge from a clean line into a more delicate ornamental boundary, adding subtle texture that catches light differently than smooth gold.
About the sculpted leaf band
The band itself is sculpted with leaf metalwork — alternating relief-carved leaf forms flowing down each shoulder from the central setting. The leaf motif has been used in nature-inspired bridal jewelry for centuries; the dimensional sculpted gold here is distinctively rendered with depth and shadow rather than the thin wire leaves common in cheaper interpretations.
The leaf band positions this ring in the nature-inspired/cottagecore aesthetic register alongside the vintage milgrain bezel, art deco cluster halos, and gothic onyx accents — the layered design vocabularies create a ring that fits multiple aesthetic categories simultaneously. With the IGI-certified lab-grown diamond center elevating the construction to genuine fine-jewelry tier, this is a multi-aesthetic heirloom engagement ring rather than a stylized alternative-bridal piece.

How to wear it
- Engagement ring — the primary role. The IGI-certified D VVS lab-grown diamond center + solid 14K yellow gold construction makes this a full heirloom-tier classical engagement ring with multi-aesthetic design depth
- Promise ring or anniversary ring — the substantial center stone composition and deliberate heirloom construction give the ring the weight of any major commitment piece
- Anniversary heirloom gift — particularly appropriate for major anniversaries (10th, 20th, 25th, 50th). The vintage-heirloom design language with documented diamond grading makes this a generational gift
- Right-hand statement ring — the layered aesthetic vocabularies and heirloom-tier construction work as a non-bridal statement piece
For an engagement ring pairing, this ring stacks beautifully with a curved or chevron contour wedding band — match in solid 14K yellow gold for a unified heirloom stack, or contrast with solid white or rose gold contour bands for a deliberate two-tone bridal look. Plain milgrain bands, twisted-rope bands, or matching leaf-motif bands all stack well alongside.

Sizing & care
Standard sizes 3–10 (US) available in the dropdown. Larger and smaller sizes are available on request — message us before ordering. Half and quarter sizes available. Sizing can vary slightly between jewelers and mandrels — up to half a size — so if you've been sized recently elsewhere, check our sizing guide before ordering or message us for a complimentary ring sizer.
For care, the ring has two stone types with different durability profiles. The lab-grown diamond (center + cluster halo accents) sits at Mohs 10 — the hardest gemstone available, fully suitable for daily wear including ultrasonic cleaning. The black onyx trillion accents sit at Mohs 6.5–7 — softer and require more careful handling. Across both, avoid impact on hard surfaces, harsh chemicals, steam cleaners, and extreme temperature changes (heat-treatment leaves onyx more sensitive to thermal shock; diamond is unaffected by thermal shock but the prong settings and bezel can suffer). Clean with warm water and a soft brush; ultrasonic cleaning is fine for the diamond portion but skip it because of the onyx accents in the same setting.
Solid 14K yellow gold doesn't need replating and holds its tone indefinitely with normal wear. A soft jewelry cloth keeps the gold bright. The trillion onyx accents have pointed corners that are the most vulnerable parts of the design — avoid impact on hard surfaces. Store the ring separately from other jewelry so the prongs and milgrain detail don't catch on other pieces. Keep the IGI certification document with your insurance paperwork; if it's lost, replacement certification can be obtained but requires sending the ring back to IGI.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real diamond?
Yes — real lab-grown diamond. Lab-grown diamond is genuine diamond (pure carbon arranged in the diamond crystal structure), with the same chemistry, same hardness (Mohs 10, the hardest gemstone), and same optical properties as a natural mined diamond. The only difference is controlled laboratory origin rather than mining. It is not moissanite (a different material), not cubic zirconia (a different material), and not a simulated diamond. It's real diamond, just lab-grown.
What does IGI certified mean?
IGI (International Gemological Institute) is one of the major independent gemological laboratories. IGI certification means the diamond's specifications (color, clarity, cut, carat weight) have been independently graded by IGI gemologists who have no commercial interest in the ring. The certification ships with the ring as a sealed document, and the certification number is laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle (microscopic, visible under magnification) to tie the physical stone to the document. IGI is the dominant certifier of lab-grown diamonds, alongside GIA and AGS.
What does D color VVS mean?
Top-tier diamond specifications. D color is the most desirable color grade for white diamond — completely colorless with no yellow or brown tint. D is the top of the GIA/IGI color scale. VVS clarity means Very, Very Slightly Included — inclusions are extremely difficult to detect even under 10x magnification by a trained gemologist. Eye-clean by an enormous margin. Only Internally Flawless (IF) and Flawless (FL) are higher clarity grades. The D color + VVS clarity combination is at the top tier of diamond specifications.
How does lab-grown diamond compare to natural mined diamond visually?
Visually indistinguishable to the unaided eye. Same chemistry, same hardness, same optical properties (brilliance, fire, scintillation). Even trained gemologists need specialized equipment (typically advanced spectroscopy) to reliably distinguish lab-grown from natural mined at high grades. The visual experience, durability, and daily-wear behavior are identical to a natural mined diamond at the same grade.
What's the price difference vs natural mined diamond?
Significant. Lab-grown diamonds at any given 4Cs grade typically cost 30–60% of the equivalent natural mined stone's price at this carat size. The savings reflect production scale (lab growth has improved dramatically in the last decade), no mining costs, and the lab-grown market's faster supply expansion. For buyers who want top-tier specifications (D color, VVS clarity, certified) at an accessible price, lab-grown is the practical choice. If you specifically want natural mined diamond, we can quote it as a custom upgrade.
Will lab-grown diamond hold its value?
Honest answer: lab-grown diamond resale market is younger and less developed than the natural mined diamond resale market, so lab-grown stones typically don't hold resale value as strongly as natural mined diamonds of equivalent grade. That said, the resale market for lab-grown is growing rapidly as the broader market matures, and IGI-certified lab-grown stones command higher resale values than uncertified ones. The certification documentation accompanying this ring meaningfully supports any future resale or insurance purposes.
What's the difference between this and the moissanite version?
Different stone material entirely. Moissanite is silicon carbide — its own distinct gemstone, not diamond. Lab-grown diamond is real diamond — same material as natural mined diamond, just lab-grown. Both are durable for daily wear (moissanite Mohs 9.25, diamond Mohs 10), but they have different optical signatures (moissanite has more "fire" / rainbow flash; diamond has more brilliance / white light return). Lab-grown diamond is also significantly more expensive than moissanite at comparable specifications. The visual differences are subtle but detectable to a trained eye; the price difference is substantial.
Can I upgrade to natural mined diamond instead?
Yes, at significant additional cost. Lab-grown is the default at this tier because it pairs top-grade diamond specifications (D VVS) with accessible heirloom-tier pricing. Natural mined diamond at the same specifications would significantly increase the ring's total price (typically 2-3x for equivalent 4Cs grade at this carat size). If you specifically want natural mined diamond — for cultural significance, traditional resale value, or the preference for natural origin — we can quote it as a custom upgrade with GIA certification.
What size is the center stone?
6.0 × 8.0 mm oval cut, approximately 1.5 carats. Oval cuts spread wider than they are deep and the elongated vertical orientation visually elongates the finger, so the stone reads larger than a 1.5ct round would. With the cluster halos extending above and below, the total ring face reads even larger as a vertical statement composition. Larger center sizes (1ct+, 2ct+) available on request for a custom quote.
Are the dark trillion accents black diamonds?
No, by default — the trillion accents are natural black onyx, a variety of chalcedony quartz with a deep opaque black body. Most commercial black onyx is heat-treated and dyed for uniform black saturation, industry standard. At this solid 14K yellow gold heirloom tier, however, we offer two black-stone upgrade pathways: lab-grown black diamond (real diamond, Mohs 10, lab-grown, chemically treated to opaque black) or natural mined black diamond (real natural mined diamond, significant price premium). Either upgrade makes the ring fully-diamond-throughout. Message us before ordering to discuss.
Are the cluster halo accents also real diamond?
Yes — the round accent stones in the top and bottom cluster halos are also real lab-grown diamond, the same material as the center stone. Color-matched to the center (D color) and SI clarity or better. This means the white stones throughout the ring (center + halos) are all real diamond rather than a mix of diamond center + simulated accents — a meaningful upgrade over typical solid-gold lab-grown diamond rings that use CZ or moissanite for accent stones.
What is milgrain?
Milgrain is a fine beaded metalwork detail — a continuous row of tiny gold beads applied along edges of jewelry. Signature of Edwardian and Victorian jewelry from the late 1800s and early 1900s. On this ring, the milgrain detail edges the bezel rim around the oval diamond center, adding subtle ornamental texture that catches light differently than smooth gold.
What is a bezel setting?
A bezel setting holds the center stone with a continuous gold rim around the stone's perimeter rather than the usual claw prongs. Advantages: protects the stone (no prongs to catch or break), gives the stone a clean architectural silhouette, and visually frames the stone to read larger. Signature of art deco and Edwardian bridal jewelry.
How does engraving work?
Complimentary engraving up to 16 characters is included. You can specify the text at checkout or message us with the engraving details before ordering. Engraving is interior (inside the band), the standard placement for engagement ring engravings.
Can I get this in 14K white or rose gold instead?
Yes — both are available on request at the same construction. White gold reads cooler/modern and emphasizes the diamond + black onyx contrast (very bridal-classical); rose gold softens the design into romantic register; yellow gold (this listing default) preserves the vintage-heirloom palette. 18K upgrades (yellow, white, or rose) are also available at additional cost. Message us before ordering.
Will this ring stack with a wedding band?
Yes. The oval center and milgrain bezel give a curved or chevron contour band natural nesting room. Match in solid 14K yellow gold for a unified heirloom stack, or contrast with solid white or rose gold contour bands for a two-tone bridal look. Plain milgrain bands, twisted-rope bands, or matching leaf-motif bands all stack well alongside.
How long until my ring ships?
Made to order, 2–6 week production timeline. Modifications (different metal, custom engraving, larger diamond, natural mined diamond center upgrade, black diamond accent upgrade, custom sizing) may extend the timeline. The IGI certification process for the center stone is included in the production timeline. We'll confirm production timing when your order is placed.
Do I need a separate appraisal?
The included IGI certification documents the diamond's 4Cs specifications and confirms lab-grown origin, which is typically sufficient for jewelry insurance underwriting. If you specifically want a separate independent monetary valuation appraisal (which estimates the ring's retail replacement value, distinct from the IGI gemological grading), that's available as an additional service at checkout. Most buyers don't need both; the IGI certification alone satisfies most insurance requirements.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. Lab-grown diamond has no mining footprint and is fully traceable from controlled-lab origin. Natural black onyx is ethically sourced and conflict-free chalcedony quartz. Natural mined diamond upgrade options (for the center or black diamond accents) are sourced from ethical conflict-free origins with verified fair-labor practices.
